Just trade it in on a 4WD. The beach I go to in NC has some real sugary sand and people are always stopping in the lanes. The hard packed sand is down at the water but you dont want to drive between the trucks and the surf thats where everyone walks. If you are going to take your truck just keep a strap hooked up to the tow rig till you get to where your going, that way you wont have to get out of your truck ever 300ft and tie up.

    K&N Air filter...yeah I know not much.
I tried to drive on the beach at Camp Lejeune once in 2wheel drive...bad idea. Center bottomed the rear axle and the tires were free spinning. Had to get another truck to pull me out. My buddy almost got his ford FX4 truck stuck doing the same thing. It was also in 4wd. Another thing to say about this beach is that Humvees get stuck out their sometimes. Stupid on our part huh!

I was cruising along Pismo today and got stuck a bunch of times. I didn't air down because I was going to stay along the coast, bad idea. I hit a dead end where I had to turn into the dune highways. Got stuck 3 times. Worst thing ever.

2wd is fine in the sand and you said that you are going with people, so when you do get stuck it will just be a quick tug to get unstuck.

Don't worry about being embarrassed about getting stuck, half the fun of being in the dunes is unsticking people/getting yourself stuck.:D

You will see plenty of 2wd "desert" trucks out at Pismo, it's just learning how to drive/stop in the sand. I learned to drive in the sand in a 96 2wd Mazda b2300, threw some sandbags in the rear to get some weight on the rear axle and hardly ever got stuck.

I wished I would have read this thread before I went to the coast. 10 minutes on the beach with a DbCb Prerunner and stuck in sand up to the axle. No shovel, no tow strap .

This is where I was dug in, no pictures of truck cuz I was pissed off!

Luckily some guys passed by in a 4wd silverado and towed me out to safe ground.

Wished I would have known about airing down, but I don't think it would have helped with my stock dunflops at20's.

The most fun was watching other 4wd and 2wd getting stuck around us, so I didn't feel so bad afterwards.

i ran the old prerunner through URE w/ bfg mt's and a 2.5" lift last year and didnt have an issue. took it on the beack and dug to the axle twice. next month i got the 4x4. drove it on the beack this year and went to corolla, nc to the virginia line. was a nice trip.

I've been stuck in sand with a 4x4, and I have cruised it not problem with 2 wheel drive. Sand seems to vary a lot. Depends on depth, grain size, moisture content etc.

I say give it a try and let us know how it goes!

Gotcha, that might be a good thing or a bad thing. Good you didn't have the opportunity to get stuck, but bad you didn't get to have a good time riding on the beach. ;)
