Like I said above, there are many different kinds of sand!

The toughest I have been in is the deep, dry, beach sand of Baja's Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) near San Felipe and Punta San Francisquito... It is a course sand mixed with crushed sea shells and/ or coral... You sink in it easily. It requires deflating in normal open differential 4WD and more deflating if mud tires, 3 ply sidewall tires, or 2WD vehicles attempt. The new TRAC LSD we have in '09 and newer Tacomas worked great and I was able to drive about at full pressure, last January with my new truck.

You got that right! It was really fun. Especially since I wasn't the one getting stuck. hahahaha.:p I'll post some details when I get the pictures from my friend. We actually have the crash and everything on video. My friend didn't record us while I flipped it back over though, he was recording the vehicles going by. Check the baja 250 thread in a few days.:D

As a native of the OBX, I would have to say that if you are planning to drive out on Oregon Inlet (which will prolly be mostly shut down during the summer due to Piping Plover Nesting Closures, AKA nutcase liberal treehuggers just trying to close yet another awesome 4wd area) in a 2wd truck, even a Tacoma, you will definately need to get towed out by your friends. Might make it if you were running 33's aired down, but not on the stockers. Sand is always rutted up in the ramp and way too deep to make it in 2wd. Now, Corolla at low tide, no problem, sand is as hard as Daytona Beach in many places. The guys on here that are telling you that you can make it at the inlet, while trying to build up your confidence and our trucks, have probably not driven Oregon Inlet in the summer time on stock tires. If so, they were the ones I saw getting pulled out..........

Sorry, but that sand at pismo is like a parking lot compared to the OBX. Much tougher going for a Prerunner.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
Spent the afternoon on Bolivar Peninsula. 2WD Off Road Prerunner.

If I stayed on the discernable "roads" on the beach, then I was fine for the most part. Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos with 42/38 PSI front/rear and was ok. Didn't bother to air down and didn't get stuck this first time. I left the locker off today.

When I started veering off the beaten track I could tell I could have gotten stuck on some places. I'm sure it was part I didn't air down tires and part it was my first time driving in sand, but overall it was fun and I learned some stuff. I'm sure if I had aired down I would've had less problems on the looser, drier sand. I did have a shovel, air compressor, recovery strap, and bucket handy if I did end up getting stuck but thankfully that didn't happen.

Looks like El Golfo de Santa Clara on the Sea of Cortez (beach closest to Arizona, south of Yuma) or San Felipe... across the gulf! Photo taken at low tide, 20 miles south of San Felipe: [IMG]

Regular all terrain or truck or hwy. tires are fine... avoid Mud Terrain (M/T) tires and 3 ply sidewalls are harder to get to 'float'.

I have always found it good to not turn the wheel unless moving forward. Learned that lesson when I was 16...
