Hey guys I'm new here to the forums and I know this has probably been asked a 1000 times but I want your opinion. Would you rather have a long travel 2wd or a somewhat built 4x4. I currently have an 1981 Chevy Blazer 4x4 and am looking to get a tacoma in the near future but can't decide on what set up to go with once I get one. I mostly hit the mud holes with the deepest being about 3 feet and pismo. So far my blazer has done all this in 2wd but I didn't go very hard at pismo due to not having someone to pull me out if I did get stuck.

So just go 4x4 with some slight mods instead of a LT 2wd?

If your mostly hitting mud you probably want 4x4.

It's the occasional mud after a rainstorm but mostly pismo and dry, hard dirt.

If you never use 4x4 then you're fine. If you turn it on once in awhile then you would surely miss not having it. You are a candidate for a 4x4 long travel I'd guess. Its a compromise of front end travel, but you can do alot with 13-14"(toyota travel, I dont know blazers) from a 4x4 if its properly valved. Add in a bypass and you can go even faster.

If you want to go as fast as possible then you'll want the 2wd 16-18" (toyota) of travel and the roll cage/engine cage/solid mounts that go along with that to use it to its potential.

Problem is I'll only be able to afford either a 2wd long travel or a 4x4 with some suspension mods.

Nothing yet. Old truck had the works.
If you have to go a little slower and be able to go everywhere and anywhere. Or be able to fly across the flat desert and look at a small hill and know you can't make it. Id say go 4x4. So many more possibilities.

I think you'll be happiest sticking with the 4x4

There isn't much you CANT get out of at Pismo, with a 4x4. Unless you rolla bead, like I've done on a few occasions. :anonymous:

Cleanup does suck but it's fun while it lasts. the mud hole is only like 10 feet long so i just go through then turn around and come back a couple times.

I would go 4x4 only because there will be time when you hit a sand pile and get stuck and won't have 4wd to help you out. But it's your personal preference if you want more travel I would go with 2wd. I'm pushing 15-16 in of travel with my 4wd lt
