Just wanting to know if you can bypass the rear Locker engaging only in 4 Low? I know Factory does it too not break the rear differential. Have not found any information on this but would be nice to lock in 4hi and 2wd for some muddy donuts haha. Thanks

    No worries.

A ton of useful information can be found in the above threads. They'll include links to videos, how-to's, etc.

Not sure why the grey wire mod is so popular though. I guess it's an easy mod, but other than that it just makes doing donuts easier.

The only reason it's "a thing" IMO is because the prerunners have the ability to lock it in hi range (because they don't have a low range), so people with 4x4s wanted that ability as well. But I have never found myself in a situation where I needed a locker and wasn't already in 4-lo. An open diff 4wd will have more traction than a locked 2wd.

But if you like doing burnouts, by all means... :D

It's useful having the rear locked and not being in 4L though where 4H is enough.

Maybe said obstacle requires some steering around a rock or something where 4L will fight you.

Same reason why some people do the twin stick mod; they only shift out of 4WD to 2WD while staying in L when completing one obstacle and moving onto the next obstacle.

Oh I get the twin stick thing. Not for the type of driving I do, but definitely see a need for having the ability to dig (I dunno if that's what it's called in the full scale realm, but in the RC crawler world, disconnecting the rear drive is called dig), then having completely independent f/r lockers.

I'm not saying the grey wire mod is not potentially useful in some situations, I've just never caught myself wishing I had done the mod.

I understand; everyone's driving is different.

But you were pretty quick to bash the idea; just thought I'd provide a realistic scenario where it could be useful.

I say this because I myself have the gray wire mod done and have used my locker while in 4H on the 4Runner.

It's true, I was thinking more about having a locked 2wd (like the prerunners), rather than having it locked in 4hi.

I run it locked in 4hi when in deep snow.

Donuts. That's pretty much the only time I used my locker in my 1st gen...

4WD-HI locked donuts are super fun.

Wouldn't 2hi locked work better if you want to do donuts?

You'll find out once you experiment....

2WD just throws the rear end around in a J... then you get enough traction to whip another J....

4WI High makes you spin like there is a pole in the center of the truck like you're on a turntable.

Grey wire mod or twin sticks won't give you front digs. You will have to get a driveline disconnect to get front digs.
