I live in Colorado. All four of the vehicles that we own are 4WD or AWD. I would not even consider getting a 2WD vehicle for any of my family members. As someone noted above, it is all about your location.

Absolutely a 4WD will always command more money than a 2WD. I live in Texas and a majority of trucks in my town are 4WD.

I live in Socal and never use my 4wd. On any of my trucks. However, its good for resale value and just in case I need it

It depends on your plans with the truck. If you are doing any kind offroading, I`d go with 4x4 if you can afford it. I know people who still offroad in 2wd trucks, and they tend to get stuck more often. If you are using it s as a daily driver and know your truck will rarely go off the pavement, go with the 2wd.

Yeah, usually when i see a good deal I jump on it. My last two i made good deals on and sold them to carvana and vroom and made money even after paying TTL. I guess I have never had one before and after going through that whole snow storm in Texas earlier this year i felt stranded and took my buddys TRD PRO taco everywhere. I know that significant of storm may never happen again but if it does i dont want to have a sense of being stranded.

Do they command more money because they're a more expensive truck to begin with or is it disproportionate to the extra price of a 4WD? From what I've seen, seems like even the 2WD utility strippers drop just a couple grand off their MSRP, same as any higher trim 4WD truck.

Depends on location and personal desire. If having 4WD makes you happy regardless of usage, then that's your choice.

For me, being in SoCal and previously having a 2013 in 4WD which never once got used, I went 2WD when recently buying my 2021 OR. I don't do any serious off-roading so the 2WD+locker is more than sufficient (have yet to need the locker), and I don't go to the snow with this vehicle, and wanted to save a bit of $. No regrets, but if that ever changes, not a big deal as there's a zillion 4WD out if I want to swap.

Depends where you live and what you plan to use it for. I have had Tacomas since 2005 and all have been 2WD until my 2018. I have needed 4WD 0 times in 16 years. I did 1 offroad day in my 2018 for fun, but have not needed 4WD. We go to Tahoe 1-2 times a year but take my wifes Outback for more dry storage. I have saved $$$ over the years on gas, insurance etc. OP only you can decide if you need 4WD or want 4WD.

The biggest difference between 2WD and 4WD is the distance you have to walk after you get stuck. ......that said.....I only buy 4WD vehicles......I need the exercise.

The price difference between 2WD and 4WD on the Tacoma's are pretty small. Also consider the resale value if you're one who likes a new vehicle often.

4wd sure came in handy last February went the whole state of Texas plunged to 0. I had to go rescue my 85 year old mother-in-law.

The incremental cost is worth it. When you need it, you need it.

I bought a 2WD because the highest hill I'll ever crest is an overpass, and the deepest mud/water I'll ever encounter will be sprinkler run-off in the curb in front of my driveway. I have zero need for it. The last 4WD vehicle I had, the only time I used it was to "exercise" the drivetrain in sand next to a road near my house. The extra expense and complexity would have been a total waste for my use case.

From KBB, leaving all other options the same for a 2019 Off Road, the trade-in value is a difference of $2,525.

Looking at Toyota's site, the price difference to go from 2 to 4 on a '22 Off Road is $1,710.

Not really that much of a difference.

    I had a 2104 2WD, got stuck (3) times within a few months. Sold it, and got a 2019 4WD. IMO...if you don't ever go off road, then you don't need 4WD.

A 2104? Did you get stuck in the dunes on Mars?

As far as any vehicle resale value 4 wheel vs 2 wheel, imo its smarter to invest that money saved by buying a 2wd vs a 4wd if 4wd is never needed.

Thanks for the numbers, much appreciated! Resale argument never made much sense to me.

Also, that's interesting considering 4WD is a $3,000 option on the base model. Wonder what makes it so much cheaper on the off road?

The upgrade for the Off Road is only to go from 2WD to 4WD.

The upgrade for the SR also includes an upgrade from the 2.7L to the 3.5L. And I'm showing a $5,435 price jump.

Correction - the above numbers are for the double cab; selecting the access cab reflects what you're saying - a $3,075 price jump for the 4.
