2wd to 4wd conversion questions for 2016 Tacoma

    Hunting for a 4g
    big question would be if like the 2nd gen, can a modern late model 4runner 4wd be a nice doner for the 3rd gen tacomas. Since no electronics and it's still shift on the fly. Someone will have to put in the leg work. Wouldn't hurt to keep eyes peeled for 4wd 4runner doner in junkyard.

    The good news is that Tacoma's retain their value well. I would sell privately and then purchase a 4WD. You could spend more money diagnosing something electronic that went wrong during the swap/conversion then you would to get into a 4WD.

    Six months ago I bought a manual transmission from a 3rd with 13k miles for $650. I'm sure you can find a t-case (I think the FJ case still fits 3rd gens and would be the direction I'd go) that works for a reasonable price. Should be able to find the other components pretty easily as well.

    If the FJ t-case still works with 3rd gens, then you don't need any electronics. Aside from a simple switch to engage the front diff.

    I am going to throw this link at you guys .
    When I hear about a 3rd gen getting swapped to 4x4 , I will be sure to add it to this link . I follow Tacoma World closely and havnt heard of anyone doing the 3rd gen swap as of " YET "

    There is a member presently removing his 2nd gen manual transmission and installing a 3rd gen manual transmission to alleviate all the clutch release bearing problems .
