Hey everyone, just curious how much would it be to do a 2014 Tacoma PreRunner 2WD conversion to 4WD if I did it myself? Thanks!

    i spent about $3200
but that was because i needed to get extended axles from total chaos to match my long travel kit and regear the new front diff to match my geared rear diff so put me like $1200 over
If i was stock i would have only spend $2000 and thats with budgeting and taking my time to get parts

About $3k or so. It's easiest to just get a new transmission out of a 4wd. If you want to save yourself the headache of dealing with electronics, you can get a transfer case and ADD tube from an FJ cruiser. You'll have sticks in the cab to select 4wd. I assisted my buddy with his conversion and it really was pretty simple with some decent mechanical knowledge. I'd say the most difficult part was swapping the transmission.

If you really want 4wd then sell your truck and buy a 4wd. The conversion is expensive, a tremendous amount of work and hassle and difficult to get it all just right. May affect resale value too, i personally wouldn’t buy a truck that some stranger with unknown ability converted to 4wd.

If you do all of the work yourself you can break even vs just trading for a 4X4 truck. If you start paying someone to do even some of the work it is financially better to just trade. But you could use the conversion as an opportunity to further modify and upgrade the truck. That is the only way I'd even think about it.
