Hi all, I'm still new to the Tacoma family, and to truck life as a whole. I have wanted a Tacoma since I was a freshman in high school and for years I dreamed of getting one. I am a smaller guy and I have always loved how well it sits, the size, etc. Not to mention it's reliability and everything else which makes it a great truck. Well fast forward to about a week ago, I was finally able to make my dream come true and put my deposit down for a 2023 Tacoma SR5 V6. It should arrive in 12 days, as I specifically wanted the silver double cab.
My truck is not a 4x4, and I am 100% sure of my choice. I have been researching Tacomas since I first rode in one my freshman year of high school. I live in Florida, I am a full time student (UCF) and I work full time (40-56 hours a week). I do not have a desire to "off-road" like crazy (maybe some dirt trails for the hell of it), but I do want to take my truck to the beach as often as I can. 90% of my driving is to work or school.
I have been 100% on my own since I was 17 (23 now) so getting this truck is something I had no help in whatsoever. I mention that because the SR5 V6 was the best truck I can afford comfortably and I did not want to settle for a base model. I also didn't feel like I needed to spend the extra money on a 4x4 I will never use and put that money into modifications I've been planning for years. I have dreamed of this truck for years and I just do not look forward to hearing the shit from some guys. But this is my situation, my money, my truck and I wouldn't chance my decision.
With all of this being said, why do some of you guys hate on 2WD so much?
I needed to vent as my girl doesn't understand lol.

Don't worry about what others think. Especially on the internet.

Internet doesn't bug me per say. I mainly just don't want to hear it from people in person and feel like I don't belong at meets and stuff. Especially after years of waiting to finally get one.

Having 4WD is like having a pistol or a condom. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around. Because one day you will need it.

Honest assessment here. 4WD is one of those things where if you don't know you need it, you probably don't. I wouldn't sweat it.

Tacomas hold their value well and you can always move into a 4wd model later on once you're a bit further into your career. Also might be worth seeing what dealer incentives come down on the gen 3s once the gen 4s start hitting lots at (likely) some point in the next year.

2WD is also crazy capable in the right hands - the top trucks at dakar? 2wd. The winner of the 2021 Crandon World Cup? 2WD. There's a reason people refer to 2WD offroad trucks are prerunners, it comes from the 2wd trucks that ran ahead of the racing at Baja. You'll be fine. Use the truck and figure out what you need.

Make sure the beaches you want to go on allow 2wd. The beaches by my parents house are 4wd only, if you get stuck with 2wd out there its a nice fine and a tow bill.

Aside from caring too much what others think; you’re on the right course. Keep at it, it’ll pay in spades!

From what I remember about Florida is that the tallest things are the overpasses so you will do fine with 2 wheel drive. Enjoy your new truck and post pictures when you get her.

Only 4WD Tacoma's are available in Canada. We have no choice. Enjoy your new truck and stay clear of TW.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
Dude, you have a brand new truck at 23 years old, fuck what anyone says about 2wd. Just carry small shovel, yankum rope and some traction boards and you’re set. Cheers dude

I don’t think some of those people hated the 2wd. Some will say it’s more of the driver. Personally, I think it doesn’t hurt to get a 4wd if you can. I have a 2wd (2007) & a 4wd (2021). I got a 4wd because I wanted one. Many times I struggle a bit with my 2wd (snow, the beach sand, & off-road). Like many are saying, you will be fine with a 2wd for most of the things you do. But if you go to the beach and drive on sand, for sure you will get stuck once in a while.

That 2WD Tacoma will be fine for many years to come. Congrats on the truck.

Oh, if that gal is giving you grief for not going 4WD, get another gal.

The guy telling you he used to glide his 87 civic up trails and past stuck jeeps is on his way. He will tell you it’s all about driver skill and finding the right line.
