Side note thats not gas milage related, but still important if your concerned about cost of ownership. With most insurance companies, the 4WD will make your insurance rates higher. Before you make a purchase call your insurance agent with the VIN and ask them what the cost difference will be. Doing so does not affect your current policy or current rate whatsoever! EVERYDAY, we have customers call AFTER buying a new vehicle and then when they see the change in insurance cost regret it. You can buy 2 of the same make/model/year trucks, but one 4WD the other 2WD or they have different packages and insurance premium will be different.

Just some additional advice most people NEVER think about when trying to budget for a new purchase :)

I just traded my 2011 base 4x4 for a 2010 prerunner 2wd. The prerunner has a book value of $4500 more, and yet my insurance went down $25.

Nothing at all. I agree with staying away from 05 and 06. Prerunners I would go with 07-08 for true mechanical limited slip differential.

Sand is a tricky bitch and not forgiving if you're 2wd and not on your A-game. Not many people "require" driving through sand on their daily commute though. Sand is usually for fun. :burnrubber:

Well I didn't say 11 because I doubt I will be able to get that newer model for my budget. I am probably pushing my luck with a 09 or 10. But, I appreciate the info about the 05-06. Seems like there are several out there that model for sale.

    .
I have had both 2WD & 4WD and from my experiences the 2WD gets about 2+ MPG better mileage.

When you are buying a truck, 2 MPG is not much. If you want or need a 4WD, get it, because you won't be happy with a 2WD.

    I don't need a 4WD, so I now go with a simpler 2WD.

I can kinda tell you want the 4WD, get it, and you will have a lower chance of buyer's remorse than a 2WD.

    I feel for you guys.

Every time I visited my son in El Segundo, I could not believe fuel and home prices.

If you're even on the fence, go 4x4 or bust.
The first time you need(want) 4x4 and don't have it you'll be kicking yourself and back on here trying to sell a prerunner so you can get 4wd, or looking at options for conversion.

Long haul, don't get buyers remorse from buying a 2WD when you wanted a 4x4 (if that's what you truly want). Both trucks will be awesome- PreRunner or 4x4. Our trucks are reliable, retain value, and are extremely capable of tackling terrain. Just take care of your routine maintenance, recalls if any, keep an eye on frame rust, draw upon the forum knowledge if something doesn't feel or sound right and you should be able to solve your issue.

If you're already counting mpg don't get a Taco (hate to say it), but there are more gas efficient vehicles in the world lol. If you don't care about the 1-2 mpg difference though and are on the fence about 4x4, just get the 4x4 and be done with the debate.

Oh and I was just saying if you're already sold on getting a Tacoma you should be looking at the different packages, AKA look at the TRD Sport vs TRD Off-Road... Both come in 4x4 but they have different options.

Feel free to read through this debate as well: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trd-sport-vs-off-road.459478/

All in all before you pull the trigger on buying a used Tacoma, post the mileage, price, package, and other specs on the forum in a new thread and people should be able to tell you if if it will generally be a bad, good, or great deal.

I don't have to have a 4x4. I think I am going to lean toward a 2wd. About the only concern I have is this: I have a 17'bass tracker boat. I usually use good concrete ramps. Do you see where the 2wd prerunner will have any issues pulling the boat off of the ramps? Im mainly looking to buy one to get around in and haul my boat to the river about every other month.

Having 4x4 could be beneficial when pulling a boat up a steeper, less maintained or slippery surfaced ramp. I've seen larger trucks struggle getting up some boat ramps in 2wd. I think having the option of switching to 4x4 is worth the added cost of the initial purchase simply because it expands the capabilities of the truck exponentially. Like someone else mentioned, you can use a 4x4 truck in 2wd most of the time but can't switch the 2x4 into 4wd when the situation calls for it.
