    Check build thread!
    I've never gone "damn, I wish I didn't have 4x4 to save 1mpg". That's all I'm gonna say.

How long are you financing where a $4k difference in price translates to a $200 a month higher payment?

Most AWD are full time, so many have been using, even when they think they haven't. That said, I don't specifically know about the Nissan Rogue, it could be different. From the quick internet search I did, it sounds like the AWD Rogue starts in AWD and then if there is no detected wheel spin, it switches to 2 to conserve fuel.
Not saying you do or don't, just that you're not comparing apples to apples here,,,, added to that a FWD SUV is going to have more traction over the drive wheels than an unloaded 2wd pickup.

I had a 2006 Prerunner (2WD) for eight years... winter of 2013 we had some good snow, went out in June of 2014 and bought Tacoma Sport.
Not much difference in the two. Head unit still sucked. I have had the opportunity to use 4WD in the snow here now so that's a big plus.

    I paid cash and said F'it... I'm getting a 4WD

I'm with the other guys drove a 2wd open diff Ranger forever and I mostly never got stuck but boy was it hard work getting through some of these snow storms with the truck basically sideways all the time.

After having a real 4WD and wife's AWD Volvo nope never again do I want RWD... well except for a Mustang with a Coyote motor but that's another midlife crisis dream.

4WD is just so much easier and simpler no feathering no opposite lock just drive.

You don't throw it in 4LO to get up your driveway? I do it all the time and bounce around like Ace Ventura!

I used to drive a Mustang in the winter. It taught me how to respect the road and conditions. However, I got 4x4 and never looked back. 99% of the time I'm in 2WD (even in the winter) but I've had many times where I wouldn't have made it with 2WD here in Michigan. If you learn how to properly drive 2WD (especially RWD) you'll learn how to appreciate and handle 4x4.

4wd. I got a prerunner 5 years ago. Didn't think I was going to get into off-roading and camping in the middle of nowhere. Well I did and now I enjoy my two-wheel drive and I barely get stuck, but I always have it in the back of my head that I should have got the four wheel drive. Cuz I love my truck and it's paid off I'm keeping it. Suits me well and the used market for four wheel drives is insane right now. Better off buying a new truck. But I'd rather not have payments. I like investing my money. Take my advice go with 4x4. I'm in southern California which is why the 2wd is mostly fine for me

Made the mistake a bought my son an older model 2x4 because he wanted a pickup, couldn't sell the damn thing fast enough after one winter with it. Any pickup I buy will be a 4x4.

I'm a big believer in buying the color you actually want. If you don't it'll always bother you. Can you cancel the MGM order and be on the lookout for a voodoo blue sr5 4x4?

I guess I'll be the contrarian and say that I've owned a truck for years and never once thought "man, I really need a 4WD right now." I drive on roads and I live in the south, so when I ordered this one, I chose a 2WD again. While some folks definitely need 4WD, most over-buy in an effort to "be ready for anything."

I've had a couple Toyota 4WD vehicles when I needed 4WD. Now, I need a rugged truck but not really 4WD, I have this Prerunner. Never thought I would own one, but there you go. Does just what I need. Knowing how not to get stuck replaces 4WD.

this caught my eye when reading your post, kinda think 4X4 might be the best play.

Tires, Softopper, fully armored, winch, many pinstripes.
That would be the ideal outcome, you get the color you want, the price you want and 4x4 just in case you ever need it. The SR5 is quite capable stock from the factory. I've taken mine places I never thought I could go, and it did it with ease.

4x4 holds its resale value, so you pay more up front but get most of it back later, especially in the case of the Tacoma

    A 2X4 is a piece of lumber, a 4X2 is a 2wd vehicle.

There are few downsides to owning a 4X4. The initial cost is a bit more, but so is resale value down the road. A fellow could spend a lifetime buying/selling/trading only 4X4 trucks and not spend much, if any more money than if he had done the same with 4X2 trucks. You'd need to take the math to the right of the decimal point to see any difference in fuel mileage. And other than changing the oil in a front diff and transfer case every 100,000 miles there are no additional maintenance costs. Unless you're abusing the truck you'll never put enough miles on the 4X4 components to wear out any of them.

I realize that I use mine more than most. I truly NEED it several times each year. But even if you only use it once in the life of the truck you'll be glad you had it.
