Honestly, I've gone up plenty of 4x4 trails that are "rated" as 4x4 / "extreme" with my lame stock SR tires aired down and a 2wd V6, and everything works fine for most trails and obstacles. Bring a shovel and a saw and some chains and some traction boards and a portable air compressor. Do you go with people or by yourself? I almost always go by myself and make sure to have a decent sense of how to get unstuck. I lost traction going back up an icy, baby-head strewn incline in Death Valley a few months ago. (I went down a trail that disintegrated into a wash -- oops.) Twenty minutes of shoveling the snow and moving some rocks plus slapping on the chains made it no issue. I'm giving this level of detail to show you that even stock SR5 tires can get you pretty far.

I live in Pismo Beach CA, with 2011 2wd Tacoma TRD offroad. The E-locker gave me the confidence to drive on the beach year around to get to my favorite fishing spots. There were a few times that the sand was dry and fluffy where I would have had a long day without that locker. But I did just upgrade to a 2020 4wd TRD Offroad, which has opened up a lot more fishing and camping spots.

At the end of the day for alot of us it is peace of mind. If you are otherwise happy with your truck and willing to spend that money on the locker, you will have more confidence and enjoy your time outdoors and will have a way to air up your tires.

There's advantages to having a locked rear on a 2wd !!!!! . Look at Desert race truck such a class 7 , class 8 or even a trophy truck they have spools

Are we really comparing tacomas to full blown race trucks now?

Cool! Sorry, didn't realize the thread started in 2018, just saw it updated today.

Also, LOL at your current pic juxtaposed with the original post where you talk about "Not doing any crazy off roading but think it would be nice for a little added assurance." Something changed between now and then.

Yea. Just got more into it. Wasn’t satisfied with a 2wd. Now doing more wheeling and camping trips with less worries. And yes I know 4wd can still get stuck lol
