LOL my dad gives me the same story when i tell him im going to pull out a stuck friend. "when i was a kid i had to drive everywhere in a 68 mustang with bald tires and a load of bricks in the trunk i always made it home!" He doesnt realize that my stuck friend is more often than not highcentered on a snowbank or in a iced over mud puddle:p

I just set the e-brake down a few clicks, enough to stop spinning freely. It's helped me out of a twist ditch before, where if I didn't know that little trick I would have been stuck.

hehe, free rear diff lock on an 08 PreRunner! woohoo :D

Happened to me on numerous occasions in my old Mazdas. I have no intention of driving my Tacoma on wet grass and stopping, the results could be hilarious.

I don't know why you think you're going to need chains if you drive in snow. My non-locker SR5 with just the standard trac/a-LSD setup does just fine in snow up to 8-10 inches.

I suppose if we had 16" of snow/ice mix I might start to want chains or dedicated snow/ice tires...

    ^^ X2 ^^

When I saw the thread, this is EXACTLY what I was going to say... The best use that I could think of was on a boat ramp.

But in a nutshell, having a rear locker in any vehicle is a benefit. It gives you an advantage over an open diff rwd truck in off road situations, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it is as good as having 4wd. It is a close second though. The one other benefit of getting the off road 2wd version of the truck is the added ground clearance over the stock 2wd truck which also helps a lot.

Best of luck on your decision!

They've been making them since 1st gens Tacoma. I would bet the TRD off-road prerunner is one of their best selling trucks since they came out.

Edit: wow this thread is from 2011
