I saw some threads on this, however they are all over the place so thought I'd start my own.
    So here's the situation peeps:
My last vehicle broke down, so I got the 2017 Tacoma (not TRD/Sport/or 4x4) tried to save cost because the pinch I was in. I've had it for about 6mo and kinda wish I had gotten the 4x4, however (at least in CA) being under 25 insurance is expensive with it.
So didn't know if anyone has done, or knows if the conversions to 4x4 are worth it or even available yet?
Looking at options and possibilities. Since I live in CA currently, there isnt much need for it yet, but going military so will be going to other states with different weather.

You are almost ALWAYS better off to sell the 2wd and get the 4x4 than to do a swap.

When a factory 4x4 is available, you will probably spend more to do the convert the 2wd and end up with a vehicle that is worth less since the entire 4x4 system is not factory installed.

Don't do it with a new truck.

This, plus seems like OP really can’t afford a new 4wd Taco.

Sell it and get something cheaper with 4wd from the factory - i.e a good used 2nd gen.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
One question here! Where do you think the military is going to send you that you NEED a 4x4? And how the heck do you know this?-- before joining up ? Either the military has changed -ALOT-- or you have the biggest liar for a military recruiter that I have ever heard of.

Do you need to know, or care?
Definately not worth conversion. Trade in and get 4X4.

Almost everyone told me this before I didn't my conversion. But it is possible to do it cost effectively.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
If you had a 2nd gen, definitely doable. 3rd gen? Sell it and get something else if you really think you need 4x4.

Also, most Bases/Posts have plowing services and keep the roads clean-ish, so I doubt you'll need 4x4. Especially if you're just going in, you're probably (assuming) going to live in the barracks.

It will require lots of down time to perform the conversion. This is the type of thing you do to a project vehicle, not a DD. Seriously, just trade it in.

I’ve seen plenty in Colorado rocking a corolla. Learn to drive, learn the search function, trade it in on a 4X4.
