Has anyone done a write-up or a video on a flywheel replacement on a 3.4 w/auto trans? I think mine is damaged. I had to replace my starter due to some grinding noises. With the new starter in, there are still some minor sounds while starter is engaging. Not sure how to check the teeth without separating the trans and engine.

Isn't there a lower cover you can remove to inspect the flywheel?

I don't really know, the last auto-transmission car I bought was in 1979...

Drop the tranny and unbolt the flex plate. Then bolt the new one in with a little ill lock tight. You will need to look up what the tourqe for the bolts is and the pattern in which you should tourqe it

It’s definitely a problem with the flexplate. Removed the starter to get a look.

Can the tranny be slid back without dropping it out completely?

You will need to disconnect the shifter linkage and drive shaft and you might be able to just slide it back while its supported on a floor jack. I would just drop it

There’s an inspection plate on the transmission. It’s facing forward from the bellhousing on the bottom.

I’ve replaced my flex plate before, it’s not fun.

While you have the transmission off, REPLACE THE REAR MAIN SEAL! Even if it’s not leaking you might as well replace it.

And buy a fully adjustable transmission jack. It is absolutely imperative to have one if you’re doing it yourself.

Unless you just never skip leg day and have mad gains then you can probably just muscle it in by yourself

Thanks. I’d have to buy a tranny jack. I’m going to see how much a local shop will charge. I’m sure I can do it myself but I know it’s a lot of work and I’d have to do it in my apartment parking lot.

I did find the cover. Wasn’t able to see anything due to the angle. I pulled the starter back off and took a pic through that hole. That showed me the damaged teeth.

I had a local shop change my clutch when it went out, cost me like 1000$ for parts and labor

500$ for just the clutch and 500$ for labor but they got it done in like half a day

The local Toyota quoted me at over $300 for the flexplate. I'd definitely have to find something a little cheaper. Not too cheap though.

Nothing for URD and just as expensive on LCE. Thanks though.

When my truck broke down due to a faulty torque converter and left me stranded, all the shops I called ranged from $750 to $1,000 in labor only. I went with the reputable transmission shop that charged $1,000 to do my flex plate when my attempt failed.

Thanks. My problem is that I don't have a grand to throw down. I may have to do this myself. I did a lot of my own suspension work, which was a nightmare. I did do this job on a 1967 Chevy truck about ten years ago...haha
