do you think itd be feasible to custom route exhaust down both sides of the engine and have them collect right before the first cat like this?

Yes. I had to delete one in order for the headers to work. One cat Tacoma now.

I was wondering that until I just visited gadgets site 95.5-00 completely bolt on. The 01-04 welding required..

I swear I've seen that setup in stock configuration before with a crossover further up under the tranny! However you could probably buy just the headers and no crossover connection if you went through pertronics and are outside Ca smog type laws. Then you could make a setup that rivals that, what you showed would theoretically have more flow! I like the flex pipes that's a idea JBA should follow.

Doug Thorley should bolt right on to my 2000 Tacoma no fabrication required?

Um I've seen a few and the crossover pipe is more length where they eliminated an extra connection making install more p.i.t.a. than JBA, motor should be pulled up and forward! Thorly has prob better flow because of this but not as easy of an install! The JBA will be simpler. I tig weld and gotta say the Thorly brands welds look amateur compared to JBA but opinions are like buttholes. I also could care less the brand as long as they are the top three, get a smog legal pair & pick what you like! You'll be happy after your skinned up knuckles heal and you push the gas!

DNA usually need a rework to make them fit on the flanges, where you connect to the cat. The ebay vendor was next to useless for support soI will have a set of the DNA headers for sale when I get the TRD headers installed this summer.
I found some TRD headers, they should be easy peasy after the fight I went through trying to install the DNAs....

reviving this thread. what is the most difficult part of this job?

and i'm curious if the nuts/studs were a issue for anyone. I tried to remove my upstream cat and ended up breaking a stud and rounded a nut on the flange. And they were not the least bit rusty. my biggest fear would be to break a stud or round a bolt in the head, or even worse strip the threads in the head.

Fox 2.0 Coilovers in the front and Fox 2.0’s in the rear, Total Chaos UCA’s, Al-lpro expo leafs, K&N cold air intake, TRD headers,Magnaflow catback exhaust,URD short throw shifter, switched out my 60/40 bench seat for some Tacoma Limited seats, Replaced the vinyl shift boot for a leather one, completely soundproofed the cab w/ Frost King. Replaced stock radio with a Pioneer AVH series head unit. Focal component system w/a 10" sub powered by 2 Alpine amps. Weathertech floor mats. Line-X'd the bed. SCS Ray 10’s, Installed an A.R.E. MX series camper shell. All-Pro Apex front bumper w/ All-Pro skid plates all the way back to the Trans. Low Range fuel skid plate.
I replaced my stock manifold exhaust for some TRD headers a few years ago and the hardest part for me was removing the stock y-pipe. I saturated the manifold nuts/bolts the night before and the morning I started and they came out no problem. Depending on the condition of your y-pipe, your bolts are most likely seized on there. I cut it off from the passenger side wheel well. It took some finagling but... “thdee hours lataah” it came out. Installation was a cinch compared to removal

Anyone know if the Doug Thorley headers are a direct bolt in for the 1997 v6 to the single cat ?

Should be, if like JBA, I have a single cat and those look the same as mine. Give Gadget a call at URD he knows for sure.
