I've owned my Tacoma for about a little less than 3 months now (a month and a half of which was in the shop getting a new frame) and I've been searching around the forums and have seen a few people claiming the 3.4 is weak. I find it quite the opposite. Mine has plenty of power, especially since I've chenged my transmission and transfer case fluid to MT90 and put official denso plugs and NGK wires (cheap autolites were in there previously). Anybody else love their 3.4 as much as me?

sorry bud. i love my tacoma all around :D. But I do think my engine is a little weak, though im sure thats because i have a 4x4. The extra weight im sure is holding it back a little, plus I think it has a higher gear ratio so it crawls easier. 4-Lo, first gear, 5krpms, 4 mph .

but damn though, my tires are only half way through their tread, and im spinning my rear right on almost every right turn and bumps. lots of torque!

Depends on how you drive or what you are used to driving. I thought a supercharged 3.4l was weak... So I swapped it with a Cummins diesel. My other truck has a corvette engine. So yeah, the 3.4 is weak.

Mine is 4x4 as well. I owned a 2.3 Ranger, but I also owned an 07 duramax. This obviously doesn't have the power of a duramax, but I still love it

I also love the whole truck and have owned mine since it was new. Every time I take it out 4 wheeling it amazes me how well it works and where it will go and always drives home nice and smooth and comfortable.
I do love the 3.4 mostly because every time I turn the key it starts, never gives me any trouble and when it does require the little maintainence they take its simple and easy to work on.
It has plenty of power and always feels strong lugging around town in 3rd and 4th gear and will still do 100 on the hwy if needed and never runs out of power in 4 lo especially with my lefty 4.7. Only place it could use more power is pulling steep grades on the hwy but a quick downshift to 4th usually takes care of that. I do still have stock gearing with 33" tires so sure that doesn't help.
I do have a Dodge Cummings with a 6 speed manual also but it just sets. I prefer to drive the old Tacoma.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I don't think it's weak. It's no race engine by any means but the truck gets out of it's way just fine and has no trouble holding 75-80 up long inclines. It's no V8, but it gets the job done just fine for this little truck. I've never had the desire for more power yet.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
I do have to say the 3.4 is my favorite Toyota engine. Its not gutless like the 22r but its just as reliable. After just under 300k miles mine will still get up and go.
Although I will say it does feel sluggish after having the 3.5 in my Avalon. but I'm addressing that currently.

I've never expierienced a stock 22r. My buddy had a built 22r that has pretty much everything deleted and it's pretty damn quick. Almost as quick as my 3.4. I don't plan on any power mods, but a supercharger would be nice. Not worth the price to me though

22R's are very gutless, reliable as hell and will go anywhere, as long as you don't mind being passed by a snail! A 3.4 feels like a rocket compared to a 22R haha.
