    crack spark plug.jpg
it could be a possibility but I rule that one out after swapping coils around. oem plugs btw, small hairline crack on the porcelain (3k only).

Sounds electrical, have you checked for chewed wire harnesses?
How do your o2 sensors look? fully plugged in to wire connection?

can't be an O2 sensor if youre having legitimate backfires. it has to do something with the ignition. that being: coil, coil boots, wires, plugs, crank/cam sensor, ignition control module. slim chance of being an injector or the computer. you really need to run a diagnostic machine on it.

it COULD be a bad intake or exhaust valve allowing the explosion to pull back at the wrong times. but then again, a bad valve spring, keeper, rocker, camshaft lobe, and/or pushrod could do the same thing. check for compression to rule out all of these!

    Just realized something!!!

if youre using platinum spark plugs, they have a much higher resistance than stock nickel, copper or even iridium. They might be putting a LOT of strain on your coils. enough in fact to give bad spark!

hmm... getting a code reader that can read post mil light be good. One thing I would suggest is having Toyota do a health check, that scan can tell you many things that a code reader can't do.

Could be a bad wire, especially if you already swapped coils around and checked plugs.
