    Hello,
I'm a Saturday mechanic , new to this forum, and am seeking any helpful advice or tips on rebuilding a 2003,3.4 , V-6 , 420K miles. Currently there's a mis-fire on #4 cylinder due to an over heat that caused an exhaust valve problem and loss of compression.
I will be replacing all the valves and some level of a rebuild or an engine swap if I can get an affordable one.
What tools will I need to do the rebuild?
    What's lapping valves all about?
    Thanks for the help.

You should take it apart and see if it’s worth rebuilding before deciding on the next move. Lapping valves is a process to seat the valves flush and ensure there is no leaks/a good seal from the valves. Being it overheated I’d buy new heads from Toyota. Whatever you decide you should definitely lap and test . I’d recommend doing it with out power tools and NOT using gas to test(or use eye protection). And if your using water to dry and oil them as the valve guides tend to rust quickly. As for the tools I would get your hands on a good manual and check out the many forms here and videos online. They are all pretty basic besides a straight edge with feeler gauge to test for warping. I also ended up getting a tool to put the valves back in.
