    Hi all-

I recently acquired a 2002 tacoma with 190k miles. The engine makes a chugging sound when the engine is warm and only in gear (not park or neutral). The sound climbs with RPM but is not noticeable really above 2k or while driving and most noticeable at low RPM. The sound more pronounced when the AC clutch is engaged; however, the sound is still made when the AC is turned off.

The truck does not burn oil and drives fine otherwise. The sound seems to be more pronounced in the cabin on the drivers side. Timing belt and water pump was recently change along with throttle body cleaning.

I am going to try and disconnect the AC belt first. Does anyone know if this is possible without removing the power steering belt?

I'm sure someone will chime in but post a video of the sound so the TW vets can help you.

OP, did you ever find the cause of the chugging? I’m having the same problem.
