Dash 3.5 Speaker/Key/Sub Install

Well pulled the trigger so no turning back now.... Figure I would post early and update as I go.

Feel free to chime in.

Harness is in prep for the Kicker Key install but first I want the 3.5s running in parallel with the doors.

I'm also attempting to salvage the stock connector by de-soldering and bypassing the stock capacitor and installing my own. Trying to figure out if I leave it and how it adds to the capacitor that is installed on the other speaker already. Also how it impacts the frequency cut off

Connector is just pressed on so bend the tabs and pop it off.

One hole lines up but the other side keeps bumping and only have a millimeter or two before it's flush.

Decisions Just staring at it for now... It would totally work mounted from the bottom up but I would have to remove the upper dash. Kinda want to do it but really don't want to do it. I'll just keep staring at it for now and mess with the passenger side.

 

Definitely want to take the Factory capacitor off. Not sure what the crossover is on it, but it’s almost certainly higher than what those JBL’s are capable of.

 

2.2uF, so about 18kHz.

The high cutoff frequency works because the slope of the crossover counteracts the natural rolloff of the tweeter, flattening the response (at the cost of efficiency).

Yeah, don't use it.

 

I wanted to do a quick test before I built the harness and put the inline capacitor that came with the speakers.

Removed the cap and extended the connection.

Phase tested it and all is good on polarity.

 

Got the speakers all mocked up and the harness built with the capacitor in line, soldered, heat shrunk, and tesa taped. Did the final cuts and as expected I couldn't use the factory mounts. Cut and shaved the top plate so it cleared the speaker.... On to the passenger side


I did use the foam on the bottom of the mid and it's on a very slight angle in line with the dash resting on the vent where that notch is cut out. Very snug and no play.

 

Well damn... not complaining but the passenger side literally took 20 min I think I sat in the truck and listened to it longer. LOUD! Damn good and clear

nice job. where are you planning on placing the Kicker Key? I put mine in my dash, but am thinking of moving it under the passenger seat.

 

Built a 7'ish foot harness ran it down the center console area and put it under the seat on an abs board.

 

Very nice! I wish I had done that instead. I'm not sure if I want to pull everything and make a new harness.

 

Ordered this today... Don't want to break the bank but want added sound in the truck. I plan on moving the Kicker Key to under the driver side with the Fosgate amp on an ABS board.

Just go ahead and return that wiring kit and get an OFC kit. Aluminum will give you problems with corrosion after a while. You can go 8awg on the OFC kit

 

Yeah, my gut told me to grab a Stinger kit... have always used them.

First piece of the puzzle showed up. Made a stand off and used the factory bolt and bolt hole location to keep the box in place.

Laid down some tape and drew out the lines of the rack to transfer onto an ABS board.

 

Nothing fancy here... just a reciprocating saw, Dremel, and some sand paper.

Now I just gotta figure out where to heat and bend it.

 

I use a butane torch to heat and bend the ABS... pro tip score a line where you want the bend and it will be perfect not melty.
To get the height I just measured the depth and used that to measure down from my first bend. It gets you in the ball park.

 

Finished all the bends and drilled the mounting holes. The rack is a little more real estate than I need but whatever it’s under the seat. Just waiting on an amp kit

 

So your rack doesn't use the front seat bolts?

Every one of these under seat installations I've seen uses the driver's side. I haven't looked at it yet. Is it easier than the passenger side to run the cables?
