Considering that a blower from trd used to run around 5k plus installation (and markup from Corp if it ever were a factory option) and a pro runs 45k, how many are clamoring for a 50-55k midsize tacoma?

BTW unless this shop foreman is named Mike and he works in the R&D center, he has no idea what's happening.

I talked to a service tech at the Toyota Dealership last week - he's been around for a long time and is a good dude. He said he's been hearing rumors of a turbo, but he had no solid info. So I have absolutely no solid info. How's that for a useless post :)

If they do come with anything it will probably coincide with the release of a Ranger w/ Ecoboost. Sounded like Toyota was simply out of the business of making turbos for these trucks though given increasingly limiting CAFE standards... One can hope, though. Sure would be nice to turbo this thing w/o screwing the powertrain warranty!

It's not a bad way to spend your money. Happy customer here of ~4 months and can't even imagine keeping this truck the way the stock tune drove anymore. And, he's not done yet now that he has his own Taco to do R&D on...

If there is ever a major engine addition to the 3rd gen, my guess is a hybrid.

The craziest I could see is maybe a 2.0 turbo.

Thanks for the feedback on the OV! I actually hadn't noticed you had the OV in your signature until just now. Are you Auto or Manual? Do you get better low end torque now (which is, of course, what we all desperately want). Thanks, and sorry if I'm sort of jacking this thread...

I would likely be all over a hybrid Tacoma.

I'm genially surprised there isn't already a hybrid Taco.

CARS.COM — Toyota announced today that it is committing to increasing both sales and availability of electrified vehicles as it plans for the future.
    1. Increase sales of electrified vehicles to 5.5 million cars by around 2030, with the added stipulation that 1 million of those be zero-emissions models like battery-powered or fuel-cell-powered electric vehicles. Lexus, Toyota's premium brand, is included in this goal.

    2. Offer every Toyota and Lexus model with an available electrified version by around 2025. To achieve this, Toyota will no longer develop vehicles without an electrified version. The automaker will also increase the number of electrified versions of current models and develop new dedicated electrified models.

    3. Increase the availability of zero-emissions vehicles by making at least 10 battery-electric vehicles available worldwide, starting with China in 2020. These models would then be introduced to other global markets, including the U.S. Toyota's passenger and commercial fuel-cell vehicle lineup will also expand.

    4. Expand the hybrid-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle lineup in the 2020s. Toyota hopes to achieve this by developing the current Toyota Hybrid System II, featured on the latest Prius models, to fit into more vehicles across the Toyota and Lexus lineup, and also developing new hybrid systems.

That's the most logical argument I've heard for why they WOULD engineer in such an expensive addition to the engine for seemingly no benefit on a naturally aspirated motor making 250ish HP. I mean having coolent veins built into the header/collector unit can't be cheap or easy to do and the whole cooling system on this truck seems like overkill for a NA setup. Seems ripe for boosting now that you mention it, plus Miller cycle motors are already a thing (supercharged Atkinson) so using turbos would just be a different way of achieving the intended effect of increasing throttle response and limiting the tendency of the intake charge to tumble back up the intake tract during the portion of the compression cycle where valves remain open. It makes sense in every way to boost the Tacomas motor except that it would easily clear 50k MSRP at that point

The new Jeep Wrangler (the "JL") has 3 engine options in the near future: the 3.6 Pentastar for 2018 (slightly uptuned so that torque comes earlier in the rpms), and coming in 2019 the 3.0 eco-diesel (uptuned to 262 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque), and a 2.0 turbocharged 4 cylinder that is a mild hybrid. Its a bit of a bummer that Jeep is out in front of Toyota with these options, but Toyota has always been conservative - especially in the American market. I would wait to see how the 2.0 turbocharged mild hybrid performs under off-road use before I get excited about hybrids off-road. Perhaps I'm just ignorant on the subject of hybrids, but that low-hanging battery on the Jeep makes me nervous...

I would think the addition of instant torque and the addition of much better weight distribution would be an excellent aid to control and balance off-road but could just be me!
