3.5 V6 ACIS plenum/manifold flap failure (2GR-FKS) SECOND UPDATE

It was around 27k. I just got another offer to buy it from the same dealer from that offer and who fixed it, for 22k. About 20k miles more though.

 

Yes. I initially suspected that the bushing I found in the cylinder after the ACIS failure caused it.....but it's unlikely that caused needling bearing and hydraulic lash adjuster failure.

 

I just pulled my intake manifold for this same issue, cylinder 3 misfire at high rpm under load. It happened to me on the highway, passing a semi. Started misfiring and went into limp mode. Thank you for posting this on the forum!

This was a pretty crazy, I’m wondering if I should remove that as a preemptive measure.

 

It helps with fuel efficiency and also more power when needed. It's part of a system. I thought about that too but the negatives out weigh the positives.

 

From what I recall, removing the flap will result in less torque down low because I think you’d be in short runner mode all the time. I might have that backwards. Either way, you’d notice a loss of performance either down low or up high and it would be noticeable. I drove around with mine unplugged just to see what it would do and I was not a fan. I’m not sure which version that resulted in though.

 

Looks like its metal. I have a long telescoping pen like thing that has a magnet on the end that might have done the trick also.

 

Unplugged would keep the valve closed.

 

Do you recall if valve closed is short runner or long runner mode? It felt like short runner mode to me.

 

Long runner for torque is usually how they are all set up.

 

Indeed. An intake runner spacer would help a bit, but not sure how much.

 

I found the 2GR-FKS document I had referenced in the last. Closed position is supposedly the long path for torque, and as you said the default for unplugged was closed. Odd, from what I remember I felt like I lost my low end. Any chance the forces of air flowing through there could open the valve? I’m not sure how much resistance there is in the motor to keep it from opening if unplugged.

Doesn’t really matter, not going to run it that way, just curious, in case the future calls for it as a temp solution.

 

Is there anyway to upgrade that part do it doesn’t break?

 

As said above, a supercharger installed is the upgrade.

Man, I feel like most of what Ive seen posted here and elsewhere is people who got a SC and fucked up their engines (and then rebuild most of the engine to compensate for the SC).

 

I was wondering about this. Have you seen any threads where someone has had one installed long term?
