I’ve only seen one guy that really related to longevity. He had a manual and he installed his SC maybe 3-4 years ago. He was getting a weird screeching noise last year at high rpm that didn’t go away when both belts were removed. The shop he had looking at it didn’t figure it out while he owned it. He traded it. That’s only one scenario but it was enough to make me not want to install one anymore. I’d rather install a new intake every 100K for $600 each as preventative maintenance.

I’m not feeling this motor will like boost with an open deck and almost 12.0 to 1 compression. It ain’t no 2JZ.

Yeah I might end up doing the same. It seems those plastic bits get brittle with age and I plan on keeping my truck for a long time. I'll go by years instead of miles though, I've only got 3k miles on my 22 lol.

Tight ring gap too. Just doesn’t really seem like a good idea.

Lotus used a version of the motor that was supercharged (2GR-FZE) but I know little about the reliability of it. I think it was 350+ hp.

Scrubbed some tires, and knocked a dent out.
Man, Ill be honest I cant necessarily point you to specific threads. Theres a few for sure. I remember one about magnuson tips tricks (etc) and definitely a few other build threads Ive come across where some one SC their tacoma. Im not in any way saying that if you SC your tacoma your fucked, but I know Ive read a bunch of threads where I got the impression that SC my truck would cost more than installing one. I seriously considered adding one to my truck, but from what I came across I couldnt afford the SC plus whatever else was needed.

Obviously all anecdotal and I cant even provide you with links so...

Respectfully… you guys have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to the reliability of the Magnusson supercharger, the compression ratio of the 3.5, wether or not it can handle boost, etc. You read a thread somewhere.

I originally wrote a longer response to this but deleted it because I felt it was distracting from the purpose of the thread which isn’t about superchargers. I will say solving the $600 intake manifold problem with a $7K (more like $10K) supercharger is worse guy math than me spending $6.5K on gears and a transmission to fix the relatively minor gearing complaints I have.

That said, find some long term reviews that are high miles. I looked and saw none. The one guy I mentioned said he has about 60K. That was the most miles I saw mentioned in any threads. I checked his posts from install to trade and it was right at 3 years, Oct 2020 to Oct 2023. That is one example and is nothing to prove reliability, but it does prove some unreliability with his engine no longer idling properly and also making whatever screeching noise he had at 6K rpm. Everybody else I found talking about miles were at maybe 30-35K. Not much longevity discussion at all. The threads are more about “wow! I just installed a supercharger and it’s amazing!” and not so much “wow, my supercharger has been amazing for 100K miles with no trouble!” Compression ratio is 11.8:1, nearly 12:1, so not sure what that comment is about. Ring gap is very tight on this motor, on most boosted engines it is left loose for heat expansion under boost. Plain and simple, the motor is not designed for boost. Whether it can handle it is one thing, but it was not designed with it in mind. It may hold up, it may not. Nobody’s trying to stop you from making the gamble.

Except that Toyota offered a factory super charger option until recently.

    So. Many. Stickers.
That was regarding the 1GR supercharger, which up through 2013 was a factory option on certain TRD builds.

Offered as a standalone (but compatible) kit 2014+, and ended in 2019 ish.

Definitely cool, but definitely a different engine lol.

    Hello Guys,

+1 more broken actuator here! Only down ~$500-600 of parts and diagnostics overall before finding this saving grace!

Happened after coming back from a Cross Country trip where one day we went to Chicken Corners, probably the day the flap broke off.
****Misfire cylinder #3, Random Misfire, CEL, and all the symptoms mentioned as far as limp mode after fast acceleration.
    • First mechanic figured it was a bad valve but recommended we kept driving and got it in to a mechanic to go deeper since he was booked up for weeks.
    • I came back and started replacing smaller tad bits just in case.
      • Replaced Spark Plug, Replaced CPS just in case, checked a few other things but it would still go into limp mode after CEL came on at hard acceleration
    • 2nd Mechanic replaced a Coil, and thought that was it.
      • I pushed it and it happened again.
    • Found this saving forums and took off intake to check myself
      • Immediately heard this was IT!!!
      • Removed the flap and initial cog (See below)

HELP: Am i missing any parts that could have fell in??? See pictures below? Should I have removed anymore from the pictures after closing it back up???
    - And as someone asked, what does this ACIS flap do and do i need it?

    THANKS EVERYONE!!!

Looks like your missing the spacer mentioned in earlier post. Probably hanging around a valve per the post above

    Thank you!
    - How likely would it be that it actually falls further down? Wouldn't the valve keep it from falling deeper?
    - Anyone know whether leaving it if I can find it, will it be ok or is there much risk to it?

I would get a camera and magnet extension from harbor freight and fish it out. I wouldnt tempt fate if the valve somehow flattened it enough to wedge itself into the valve travel you will have combustion gases pushing through the intake

    - 119K miles, 99% daily driver
    - Was off roading at Chicken Corners when I am sure it happened.
    - I bought it used about 5 years ago, when it only had 40K miles or so.
