Only an idiot would buy any Tacoma to pull a trailer - that's what they Tundra's and full size pick-ups are for - Tacoma's with 4 cyl. or V-6's are light duty trucks for hauling people or small items and small trailers - nothing more

But the 4 cylinder was horrible going anywhere remotely elevated. You're always at the top of the revs just trying to keep up and might as well give up trying to pass anything.

Yeah, so you'll be running 100 hp at 12000 feet. Obviously you need to consider all the factors that impact you when making your choices. Most people won't be operating at extreme elevation though.

After putting 265/75/16 tires on there is no difference in mileage between my tacoma and our 5th gen 4runner (4.0L)

Are you accounting for the odometer reading low due to the tires having a larger circumference?

    No

my tires are now the same circumference as our 4runner. MPG are now the same for either one.

I would not trade back to the stock 245 white knuckle scary as hell handling tires.

may have taken a hit but it is totally worth it with the handling of the new tires.

My point is that your mpg's may be better than you think, because you are actually traveling further than what the odometer records.

I've got over 200,000 km on 245/75R15's, and they're anything but "white knuckle scary as hell handling". True that the factory tires were a poor quality compared to what I'm running now (they burned to nothing in the first 40,000 km), but even they didn't handle badly. I imagine that you must have had something really strange going on with yours, like incorrect pressure, and unmatched pressures.

Handling is solid as a rock on these 245/75 E's.

    Here's how it actually went:

Somebody said "The 4cyl can't do that."
You trolled with, "Why yes it can, I am amazeballs, and here's an anecdotal story to back up my trolling."
Others said, "That's dangerous, don't do it, here's why."
You trolled back with, "Everybody is picking on me."

I wish Tacomas came with start/stop technology. Many would gain an extra 2 mpg just from that.
