Technically it is improved compared to the 2nd generation. 19mpg city for a 5600LB truck, not too shabby IMHO.

Most of my trips are under 5 miles so I realize mine wouldn't be good, but then my 4cyl Outback under the same conditions was only getting between 22-24 mpg in town. That said I was hoping for better as well.

I am averaging 16 mpg at 8600 miles. 97% highway driving.

Does anyone know if the Nav unit can show a lifetime average of mileage? My 16 mpg was manually calculated from my log book since I got the Taco.

Keep in mind that for at least the OR models, both the odometer and the computer derived mpg are not accurate. Most people don't care about being accurate so they just report the computer average which means there is two factors contributing to lower than actual numbers.

The fuelly numbers all over the place, but it's like that for most vehicles. You have some people who drive like grandpa and some who think they're in a fast and furious movie. Some drive in the mountains and some hardly see any hills. So many variables for gas mileage. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that actually saw an improvement in mpg. The fuelly average for 2008 Tacomas is 18.2 and my 08 TRDOR averaged 17.9. My 2016 TRD Sport has an average of 20.7 at the moment.

It's winter. Winter gas. No more regular cabs. 4 cylinders are now heavier with the same engine. No 5 lugs. New off-road comes with all terrain tires and is the most purchased model. Lots of things in play. I'm getting 2 more mpg going from 2013 to 2016

Apples to oranges if I've ever seen it.

You're running your truck in the absolute worst possible conditions and still getting 18+ MPG, that's pretty good.

Wow you just said something that slipped my mind. My TRD OR 4X4 AUTO has 265/75/R16 good year tires ... I am sure they make a difference in mileage than say the limited 18 inch tires. Thoughts anyone?

The 4cyl is not in discussion here because I filtered to just the 3.5L

Probably not too much extra weight on the Limited trim level combos with the larger wheels, I'd be surprised if there was much difference in MPG between the two.

There are numbers all over the place, but the average is still the average. Now compare that to the 4.0L in previous model years. Tell me what you see

Make sure you filter out all 4.0L data gathered March through August since none of the '16 owners have any data points for the summer months.

My numbers are in the 20s because I have almost 10% of my 2200 miles of offroading. I get anywhere from 4 to 12 mpg when off roading. I average around 24-25 when I don't offroad on a tank

So by next Fall time frame we should have a more realistic dataset
