I'm not rock crawling but driving through some pretty rough (muddy in places) back roads & ranch roads across varying elevations that are unmaintained. Also forded a creek about 10 to 20 yards from bank to bank at least 8 times with water up to the bottom of the doors.

Ok, so mostly dirt roads. I will have video of the 4.5mpg trip. I also never turn off the engine when wheeling. Unless we are going to be stopped for more than 20 minutes or so

Yes, the average is close. I was actually referring more to the fact that the numbers being all over the place mirrored what folks were saying on here. I'm not here to argue about how good or bad the 3.5 is or the validity of the numbers on fuelly. My personal experience with the new engine has been good so far. If you don't like it that's fine, but I, personally, wouldn't consider an average number based on unverified sources with so many variables to be an indictment of the engine.

You should create a thread, if there's not already one, for people to post videos and such. There's not really any good places around me to off road (which is why I bought 2wd), so I'll have to live vicariously through you guys out west. :)

Many are driving with ECT on. Not many light footed drivers.

Not real happy with my 17.5. I was getting the same with 2002.

My 2013 Limited DCLB is just under 5000# with a canopy. I highly doubt any new Tacoma tops 5600.

Hell, I just bought a 2015 Titan King cab Pro4x and that only weighs in at 5100#.

actually driving w/o ECT on I am now use to the way the transmission shifts. rarely do I turn on ECT, its to the point that with it on, I actually cant stand the shift points.

if I need power, I just push the pedal deeper than 1/2 and it will shift/rev just like if you had ECT turned on.

I have just over 400 miles on my limited. My first tank I averaged 18.2mpg and this current tank I am averaging 19.3. I currently live in DC but commute out of the city for work every day. Based on the trip computer when I commute to and from work(20 miles, 60/40 highway/city split) I have seen 19-22mpg. When I do short trips around the city I am seeing 18-19mpg. This is my first Tacoma, but coming from my 2010 Nissan Xterra Off Road MT its a nice improvement. I was lucky to see 18-19 all highway with the Xterra.

No. Short trips, winter gas, one size up tire. Best I have gotten by computer calculations is 16 average going 55 for 20 miles. Calculating by annual method verifies 13 mpg. It has also been average of about 0 degrees here

For whatever it's worth. 3.5engine AT, 4 door 4x4 sport. Goodyear adventures with 42 psi cold. About a 70/30 mix urban/rural. Lately more 4 wheeling because of snow and ice. 1700 miles. 18-21 mpg. Found the Eco information on the information display to be exact as calculated fuel usage down to the decimal point.

Got you but I have a larger than stock tires. I know there is a whole thread on this issue and not preaching or claiming to be a know it all. I was running 32 but spoke to my tire dealer. He said 42 shouldnt be an issue since 51 is max for the load rating on the tire and might get me a bit better MPG. The ride is fine. No bouncing or jumping around. Chalk test shows an even line.
