Going back some to a head leak our shop had in a fairly new 305 gmc truck. The dealership replaced the head gasket in warranty yet it still leaked a week later. Took it back, and asked them if they checked for a warped head. It was like a light bulb lit up. They never did saying this was a new truck, new engine, it's not likely. Sure enough warped head. :frusty:

Same basic motor as far as I know.
Only the stroke is different other then the injection system and valve train. They are both fine. The 4.0 has much better low end torque which means it will run at lower rpm more often perhaps giving it a slight edge in longevity. My wife has the 3.5 in the venza and I have the 4.0 in a 2015 Tacoma. Have driven the newer motor. Love it in my wife’s car, hate it in the 2016 plus truck. My nod is the 4.0, but there are many other things about the newer generation you might like better, like handling, electronics etc. Overall, I wouldn’t let the motor be the deciding factor till you drive a newer one for an extended time.

Don’t get me wrong I think the 2grfks is a bulletproof engine certainly just as good as the 4.0

It’s more about that particular member and less so the engine compare.
You can ask about something trivial like best spark plug for the 3.5… and his answer will be. “Yo I thought the 3.5 doesn’t need spark plugs, should have gotten the 2.7”

The factory service manual does not say to remove the engine. It does say to remove the oil pan, but it only has you remove the steering rack and front differential (if 4WD) to get to the oil pan. The engine stays in the truck.

Toyota uses the same OCI for the 3.5L and the 4.0L for the same years, used to be 5,000 miles, now it's 10,000 miles, for both.

Toyota has never had the PCV valve listed as a maintenance item, at least not for the last 40 years.

There actually were timing cover leaks on the 4.0 as well, in fact there is a TSB for 2005-2008 Tacomas with the 1GR to repair a leaking timing cover.
