4.0 period. For no other reason than I stayed at a holiday inn last night. And my truck started in the morning.

My 2003 4runner had 4.0 V6, had over 150K miles on it and lived in rustbelt when I got the car. Air filter was just... brown/blackish, oil filter was stuck so bad we had to cut it and try to force it out, engine oil itself was black and MPG was 14.... Basically you could tell that owner stopped caring about car moment they started thinking about selling it.. Frame was rusted ( yes i got scammed ) I could tell car has been thru some heavy towing.. recovery points long gone along with part of the frame and so was the receiver hitch gone.

Even with all this, I was still able to drive it 2 years without any oil consumption, topping 19MPG, AC/HEAT working, 4wheel drive working, no issues whatsoever. I could FEEL the engine in there. Only thing I did was to keep putting Valvoline advanced engine oil and Toyota OEM filter, as well as new air filters and Shell, Exxon etc fuel. However did have issue with the rusted break line. Yes, I one day pulled in driveway and kept hearing this evaporating sound, soon to realize the break fluid was fountaining out all over and hitting exhaust pipe. I was pressing break pedal but car was rolling still.... I was lucky I found it out in driveway and not on highway :) This was last pill i swallowed before I traded it in and cried.

So my answer to 4.0L V6 is very positive. 3.5L V6 I have in Taco is new so can't really say much, but if you wait 12 years I will let you know.

Wonder if anyone took the 3.5 and hooked it up to the 2nd gen auto transmission? Most are happy that got a manual with the 3.5.

I'd rather drive 3.5 one than that archaic 4 banger.
It probably outputs more even with leaky valves.

Say what you want, but this 3.5 sr5 runs so much like my 4.7 2001 tundra, its scary.

I would add: surfaces that were/are not perfectly clean before re-assembly: Sealer or Gasket (with or without sealer) applications. Makes no difference... even when the component surfaces were not under pressure. Rush the prep or mail it in: and it will bite you: you're doing the job over sooner or later and eating the cost.

According to my mechanic, the 4.0. the local shop sees way more 3rd gen in the shop for engine reasons

My 2006 4.0 is running strong as hell at 241k. Doesnt burn oil or leak any fluids. My buddy has one at 250k and its boosted and still going strong. Only issues iv seen from 4.0's come from lack of regular oil changes. Gums them up and they stretch the timing chains and cause timing codes. Need to replace chains and gears to fix
