Well, you have what you want. Again why argue?

I do agree that I would rather have low rpm torque. Toyota decided to do it differently. Nothing to really argue about.

    4.0L: 94mm bore, 95mm stroke
    3.5L: 94mm bore, 83mm stroke

Not much else to say, the 4.0L has the longer lever.

But wait... the 4L and the 3.5L have the same peak torque.

Not the same, 600rpm later. Not saying it's a bad engine, just different. It's like the Ford 300 I6 vs a 302 V8. Apple to an Orange.

Wonder if the crankshaft from the 4.0L can fit the 3.5 block with some shorter pistons and/or rods

Ultimately I would have loved the Gen3 with the 4.0L. Since that's not going to happen, I'll have to wait and see what the future brings.

That must be on flat ground, we are talking about pulling up a hill, which is MUCH more difficult and what you mentioned earlier.
Look up the IKE gauntlet--see how the 2nd gen is 40 seconds SLOWER than the 3rd gen.

I'm not arguing with that. I admit the 3.5 generates more hp at high rpm. I don't often race up hills even close to that however I will find myself in the bush trying to pull out a trailer load of firewood over a tree root whilst my rpm is only 1500. Let's all admit that our lifestyles and needs are different.
The 4.0 works better for me.

TBH the newer 3.5 has 1 less lb ft which has always blowed my mind that they actually put an engine with less torque in the newer model.
I don't know why someone would do that lol but to my knowledge the 1GR has a bigger crankshaft which means larger bearings which means not only would it not fit in the block but the connecting rods wouldn't fit around the crank even if you got it in there. And if they are the same size, being the two engines have completely different stroke means your timing, fuel, and air are completely messed up. You change crank, you change cams, unless you can tune.

I tossed this out there b/c back in my old water-cooled VW days we'd could take the 1.8L 4 cyl and bump them up to 2.1L with a crank from the Audi 2L and then use the double overbore pistons.

Understandable. But Toyota is no VW, that's for sure :D.

Funny that the dyno graphs posted earlier in this thread show the 3.5 making more torque at 2000 rpm than the 4.0. Electronic throttle programming is soft, but it still makes more torque "down low."

The 4.0 is a great motor! But the 3.5 is also an excellent motor.

Why do you think the crankshaft journals are bigger? More stroke doesn't mean bigger journals. You could consolidate lots of parts by using the same journal size. It would also allow for more flexibility when casting engine blocks. I think it's more likely they just shortened the stroke of the 4.0L and left everything else on the crank the same. I haven't looked at dimensions though.

Having only owning my 4.0 for several months I have test drove several 3rd gens. Both good motors imho the 6speed to me left more to be desired shift point wise. But around town an low end I felt 4.0 seemed more responsive but accelerating an passing power 3.5 takes the cake.

I liken the 4.0 and the 3.5 to the small block Chevy engine family. The 327 and the 350 had similar differences. The 327 just had a shorter stroke than the 350 and would rev higher and make more hp. The 350 had better low end for work truck applications. I understand there were many variations of these motors depending on cams, pistons, heads and compression ratios. I'm comparing generally speaking... I was there. that was my era.

I'd personally love to see how these trucks would perform with a two liter turbo under the hood. High rpms for sure, but I bet it'd handle my 1500 lb teardrop camper just fine.

Probably gonna test drive one soon once I find one, I was just at Ford and they had at least six 18's on the lot. It may not be my 3.5 eco but it sure does pack a punch for its displacement.
