Why don't you try to get a TRD Sport model without the tonneau cover and save the money. Also with the factory tonneau cover, Toyota puts mounting hardware on the bed sides, which you wouldn't need if you put a cover on.

 

If it's tuned right, maybe it will have the best power/weight ratio, but in the mean time let me give you a ride in my 17 Lariat 3.5 eco "scoot"

I thought I was the only one who thought it sounded like a diesel

 

But this is not a Toyota thing in itself. I was next to a Honda pilot at a light and it sounded like a sewing machine eating an empty beer can. Made my Tacoma seem like a purring kitten in comparison.

 

People pay a lot of money for aftermarket exhausts to get their Tacoma to sound that way

 

Mine does not sound as loud as it did in the cleaning cycle when new.

 

I don't like a loud vehicle unless it has something to say. I'm talking horsepower levels in access of 500 HP. Just me.

 

Same thing with my 11 tacoma bottom end more power but after second gear new tacoma it out perform's the 4.0

 

I had the 4.0 liter in my 2010 4Runner, and I know it's tweaked a little different than the Gen 2 Tacoma's version, it's still pretty much the same. I will say the 3.5 is giving me better gas mileage. If the meter on the truck's computer is to be believed, I'm averaging 23-24 mpg per tank, mixed driving. In my 4Runner I was getting about 19-20 mixed driving. I understand the 4Runner gets better gas mileage than the gen 2 Tacoma, so take this for what it's worth. I do really miss the low end torque of that engine/transmission, that's been my sticking point with the new Tacoma. But the way the 3.5 comes to life above 3000 rpm's is really pretty cool. My next truck will be a gas hogging Tundra with power and torque, but until then I'm going to try to make the most of my gen 3 Tacoma.

 

Unless you live in hilly or mountainous areas, my 4.0 would climb in 6th gear without me having to downshift, I either have to get this one up to 75 at the bottom of the hills to carry enough speed or downshift.

 

I just hope my '13 will last until they put a truck motor back into the Tacoma or at least offer one as an option. Remember people, this is a a truck! Trucks are for work... or at least they used to be.

 

Didn't the 4.0 liter have a 5 speed transmission??

 

Manual transmission was a 6 speed.

 

Both my 4.0s, 08 and 15 had 6 Speed Manuals as does my 17.

 

I live in northeast pa all I have is hills there's nothing flat around where i live. literally gotta drive 100 miles south to get to flat land . The first 1,000 miles the trans searched for gears but now has 4,500 on it shifts like my tundra did which was also had a six speed

 

Yea my 11 had five speed auto , manual was 6 speed

 

Last Tacoma I had before my 2016 was a 5 speed manual 2004, the last of the 1st gen. That's why I asked. Ah, what a truck she was.
