3 relays for Offroad lights???

So the previous owner of my Taco put on an Nfab bar and added four lights to it as seen below...



They are horrible lights that arent even as bright as my headlights, but the point of this post is to try to understand why he used THREE relays for the lights...

The first relay is controlled by the interior switch, and the other two relays each handle two of the lights, and both have their own wore to the battery with an in line fuse...


Am I not thinking correctly, or is this the most convoluted, stupid way to wire these lights in?!?!

 

Are you saying they are switched off the ground then?

 

I'll have to get a picture, or draw up a wiring diagram tonorrow in the light. There are 2 relays wired correctly, but the wire that should be coming from the switch on both relays are spliced together and run to another relay that then goes to the switch

 

I think I'm understanding that but a diagram would make it a bit clearer to understand.

 

Just overkill - why don't you just ask the previous owner. How would anyone else on this forum know????

 

I'll draw one up tomorrkw when I have some light to work with, but I'm pretty sure I only need a single relay right?

 

Could he of been using multiple relays over thinking the amperage draw rating of the relay?

 

Im not asking for someone here to explain why he did it, just trying to see if there would be any reason at all to run more than a single relay.

Also, the previous owner is living in Germany where I bought the thing, and I am now in florida. Also, he figured out after he sold it to me for 18k, that the bank valued it at 28k, and came asking for more money. When I declined him and explained that we got all the sales paperwork finalized and notarized at the legal office, he found out where I lived and kept showing up at my door and parking outside my house...

I had to notify my commander and we track down his Army commander and afterwards it stopped. So, not going to even bother contacting him

 

If you want all four lights to come on with a switch, you can use a single relay (depending on the combined amperage draw of all four lamps). I have the same light bar and two set of lights, one switched inside the cab (wired through 1 relay) and the other set switched by the highbeams (wired through a second relay)

 

Currently, all four come on with one switch, he just ran two relays and spliced all the wires together for some reason. It's hard to explain, wiring diagram tomorrow will help

 

Your 2009 truck was valued at 28k?

It sounds like he used a single relay to trip the other 2 which splits load you are right would be way overkill and pointless. The only way you may need 2 relays with 4 lights is how much power each bulb is drawing which can not be told by just brightness compared to headlights.

Sounds weird to me.

 

Yeah, I financed half of it solely for credit building purposes, and the bank ran the Vin and milage and said 28k

Yeah, not sure how they came up with heir numbers, but that's what the paperwork I just double checked said... who knows

 

When I registered is here in Florida, I had to pay sales tax because I didn't in Germany. They based the tax on "fair market value" and came up with 24k...
