If you can do oil/diff/TC/PS/sparkplugs/and other maintenance items I'm sure you could do the trans by following the how to's on TW. Try it the next maintenance interval. What's the worst that could happen - you wind up at the dealer for $200 - the best you save $175.

Ugh I took my Tacoma in for the 30,000 mile service today. Was told over the phone that it would be $309 + tax. I specifically asked if it included spark plug replacement they said yes (I actually even called twice to confirm what was included in the service). I get there they say no it doesn't and want to charge me $140 for spark plug replacement in addition to the $309 + another $130 for rear diff fluid replacement. $309 + tax becomes $545 + tax...wasted an hour driving (and the associated fuel).

Going to be doing this myself now.

Workman should have just drained and refilled the transmission himself and saved himself some Benjamins. Next time Workman will know better. :D

Not quite as effective as a full transmission flush, but drain and refill at slightly shorter intervals will be just as, if not more effective.

I told him their name but frankly I didn't feel like arguing with them. Regardless of if I could have gotten the spark plugs covered in the initial quote I wouldn't have gotten the diff fluid replacement covered. $300 was basically the limit of what I was willing to spend versus just doing it myself. It will end up saving me a lot of money down the road. I had planned on taking it to Toyota for all maintenance throughout the warranty period so that I had an excellent service record (the last vehicle I purchased was a new Subaru that lunched a motor in 3k miles and basically evolved into a lemon). Now I am just going to do it all myself. This stuff is laughable though; $140 to change 6 plugs...thanks but no thanks.

I don't blame you. Last time I took a vehicle in for transmission fluid replacement was a 2006 Acura RSX-S. I heard the tech rummaging around for what seemed like too long looking for the drain bolt. I look under the car he has pulled like 5 random bolts out of my transmission. I had to help him find the drain bolt.

From this point on I am doing all maintenance myself.

This is for a 2007, but should be the same.

I hate that crap. I'd guess they find the avg noob will just say ok to some last minute padding. But then, the avg noob probably doesn't ask such questions in the first place. Pays to know your customer.

Wait a second, I don't need to replace the rear differential oil do I? I have a 2010 Tacoma Dbl Cab 4x4 4.0L V6 Sport, 5 speed auto, standard bed. According to the Toyota Warranty and Maintenance Guide the rear diff oil (normal driving conditions, not special operating conditions) is replaced at 30,000 miles on vehicles with limited slip differential only. 2009 onward all Tacomas had open rear diff except for the offroad model which had a locking diff correct? Were limited slips even an option on my vehicle?

I had thought my vehicle had an open rear diff and I asked the advisor about this. He went away to presumably talk to a mechanic and came back telling me it had a limited slip and it would cost me $130 or something to replace the oil. Not good when the Toyota authorized service center can't figure out what type of rear diff you have...

My own fault for taking it there. I bought a Subaru from this dealer. After the Subie's engine grenaded at 3k miles (manufacturer rod bearing defect) they never could get it put back together right. I'd receive it back from them missing bolts, hose clamps, low on fluids, and I swear it still had a boost leak somewhere when I finally dumped it. The Toyota service center was separate from the general auto service center so I tried them out. They had done good work thus far but after this deal I think I am done with them.

You don't need to change rear diff oil under normal driving conditions, at 30k miles. You do not have a mechanical LSD. You have an electronic 'Auto LSD', which uses the brakes to control the wheel spin.

That is what I thought going in. The advisor brought up some kind of document on his computer "showing" that my vehicle had a mechanical lsd. At that point I knew I wasn't going to have them do any service for me so I really didn't push the issue. I don't know if it (mechanical lsd) was even an option but my sales documents doesn't show it on my vehicle even if it was an option.

Though I am complaining about their incompetence I probably will replace it anyway. Recently drove through some water that was questionably high. Right around center hub deep but it could have been a touch more than that. Due to the breather on the rear diff I think I will replace to be on the safe side.

There would be a sticker on the rear diff saying something to the affect of "LSD Additive Req'd" or LSD Fluid, something like that if you had a mechanical LSD. FWIW, I have an open differential and replaced the front and rear fluids at 30k miles as well as the transfer case fluids.

A dealer ask me $360 for 30k service, which was for oil, front and rear diff, air filters and inspect on some other things.
I'll do the diffs myself. Can I use 80W-90 oil for front and rear diff and transfer case, also what's the torque for rear diff?
    Thanks

ALL the 2005 to 2008 SPORT TRD had a mechanical limited slip differential and some SR-5 models during those 4 years, as well.

No sir. Not just the Sports.

You are correct that ONLY 2005 - 2008 Tacomas had the mechanical limited slip option though. It was 'discontinued' as an option after 2008.

    Correct:

I went to the dealer today to get my 30k service done and thought that my first major service was included (in 2 year free maintenance) guess i didnt look at the fine print the dealer wanted $430 for 30k service i said no thanks. Guess i will be doing it myself like everybody ends up doing.
