Hey guys so I just hit 30,000 miles on my 2017 and I called the local dealer for a quote and they said about $290??

Does that sound reasonable? What does the 30,000 service include? Oil change, fluid level check, and tire rotations?

Oil change and tire rotation most likely, but you should ask them to be sure.

Here's from Toyota Owners website, you can go plug in your vehicle/mileage and see the maintenance schedule.

30K should also include front and rear differential gear oil change.

All service intervals should include tire rotation, driveshaft Zerk re-grease, and shaft/spring bolt re-torque. You can certainly do it cheaper DIY, but it'll require some work, semi-specialized tools, jack stands, and time.

$290 seems about right if you get all of the above. YMMV, depending on the dealer.

    Advice:
    • REQUIRE the dealer to stamp it with their official dealer stamp, in your maintenance logbook, and provide an invoice with all of the maintenance points listed, before you pay the $290.
    • Better yet, tell the maintenance writer UP FRONT you will require all of the above, before you swipe your card for payment.
I quit going to the dealer after the 2nd free oil change. Should have quit sooner... the maintenance techs ALWAYS got something wrong that required a U-turn back to the service bay.

On my first DIY oil change, I discovered 2 cross-threaded and stripped skid plate bolts. UGH.

I will NEVER again trust the dealer techs. ALWAYS will go to my trusted friend mechanic, even for warranty/recall. Find yourself one of those mechanics... they are gold in the bank. Find one who likes CA$H money, and save yourself a whole lot of dough in the long term, after your rig is paid off.

Is this required to maintain warranty? I'm at 27,500 miles on my '17 and was wondering.

Yes, regularly scheduled maintenance is required to maintain your warranty.

And if you DIY or have a mechanic do the work, Get receipts for all materials, invoice stating exactly what was done, and make sure it covers all of the points listed in the Maintenence Log. Somewhere on this site is a 10K mile service form that is a great checklist for DIY, including torque specs. I use it every time I do an oil change.

i am about to DIY my 30k service. Toyota of Carlsbad quoted 1799$ for it including the T-Case, front and rear differential oil change. I had to laugh and walk out.

If the failure is maintenance related then maybe yes. But IDK of any cases where TOYOTA has denied a repair during the warranty period.

    Cheers!

You can do all those yourself for less than $100 total with the best synthetic fluids. I’m sure you know

Buy Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart and send in for a $12 Rebate and that works out to a little over $2 per Quart. Buy your Toyota Filters in bulks of 5 or 10 on Amazon or E-bay and your oil change total costs less than $20.

If you're capable of doing it yourself, do it. If you're unsure, pay for piece of mind. It's not that much in the grand scheme of things.

I strongly believe in proper maintenance using quality parts and fluids, and keeping a written log is ideal.
Toyota acknowledges that some owners will prefer to perform their own work, and I’ve never seen a warranty claim denied because the owner sought maintenance outside of the dealer network. I have seen a handful(or less) claims denied from abuse(I.e. hydro lock, launching truck off jumps, etc) but never around maintenance.
The huge advantage visiting a dealer service dept for maintenance other than their insane familiarity with the product and an awesome support network is when a owner might seek goodwill assistance on a issue just outside of warranty. The Toyota Parts and Service reps are vastly more likely to offer some level of financial assistance if they think they’re keeping a loyal customer. Quite often factory assistance is only offered if the dealer service dept offers to chip in, too. It was common for me to see offers where the factory would offer 25-50% help if the dealer offered 25%, leaving 25% to the customer. That way everyone has a vested interest.
So if you do ever seek factory goodwill assistance make sure you do it through either the dealer you bought it from or have it regularly serviced at.

One of these days I'm going to flip my mat upside down and make it crooked just to see what they write on the service report. :D
