I paid 1800 for an 8 Year up to 120,000 miles (something like that) for my extended warranty. But i also got 1400 when i traded it in. Sounds like they are making some $$of to me. But i guess that is how it works.

That's how it works if you play their game... and just like Vegas, the house always wins their game.

If its 4.0 you don't want to replace with iridiums. Do some research on 30k dervice and do it yourself op save you some cash.

The 30K plug change is for emission compliance. Never seen a modern engine that needed plugs at 30K yet.

Agreed, that price quote is outrageous. With all the "how to's" on Tacomaworld you can easily do it yourself. I have changed the oil twice on my truck since owning and its a piece of cake. I am getting ready to change out the dif and t-case fluids this weekend along with swapping the plugs. Even with buying some tools I need to do the job properly (torque wrench, individual large sockets etc.) and synthetic fluids, i am only down about $120. I am by no means a mechanic but i feel confident i can do it myself.

Save the money, do it yourself on a weekend then grab a beer a relax knowing your just treated your truck better than a dealership and learned something in the process.

I paid $2300 for my extended warranty 7 year/100,000 which is the platinum care, I figured if anything happens the dealer will cover it, Longo has been pretty good about everything I've done to my truck so far so it was an investment. I figure a few repair trips to the dealer will more than enough pay for that steep $2300 cost lol. I can't afford to pay repair costs at this time so it was added to my monthly payments.

I will you the best of luck with the extended warrenty, but these are big profit makers for the dealerships and it far more likely that you won't need a major repair in 7 years/100k.

When bad things do happen, you often have to sue the dealer to make it right. We had a terrible time with an extended warrenty on a Land Crusier which resulted in TWO motor changes in three years.

I don't know about the 2012 V6 engine but the I4 has had iridium plugs in it at least since 2005 and only need to be changed every 100k miles.

OP, you got screwed and have an incredibly dishonest dealership. If you do your own service and keep the records, there's no way they can void the warranty unless you have some really really f-d up terms. Also, that line they fed you about voiding a warranty because of tire rotation is ridiculous and should throw up a HUGE red flag. If they're voiding a complete warranty over tire rotation, then that should tell you that is the type of dealership you'll end up threatening legal action to get them to cover a claim anyways so you might as well save yourself some money in the mean time and do your own service. Do you have a copy of the terms of the warranty? If so, you might want to read up and when you realize that the dealership is full of BS, call Toyota Corporate.

Since you and your dealer are within the United States, you should look up and read the Magnuson-Moss [warranty] act. In a nutshell, it says that warranties cannot be blanket voided, but rather can only be voided as a result of actions you take that have a direct and provable association to the failure in question for warranty coverage, and even then, only coverage of the specific affected components can be voided, leaving the rest of the vehicle's coverage intact.

Further, they cannot void warranty as a result of WHO performs routine service/maintenance, unless it can be shown that the service/maintenance was actually done incorrectly or not at all.

Now since this isn't a factory warranty, you really should read the warranty paperwork, which they are legally obligated to provide to you. It is possible that they can make the warranty conditional on service that goes beyond the scope of the factory service schedule, but in order for this requirement to be valid, they have to provide you with the details of those additional service requirements. Again, however, by law, it is your choice as to who actually performs the service, as long as it is performed in accordance with their specifications.

My guess is that it's not really a 'warranty' at all, as the law would define it, but instead an insurance policy. Of course, to identify the distinction would require someone pretty well versed in the law on such matters...and of course that paperwork you mention. That's important because magnusson-moss applies to warranties, not insurance, if I'm not mistaken.

At any rate, in the absence of such paperwork it's nothing but a hollow promise conveyed by word of mouth to keep a naive consumer coming back. What is so very frightening is that so many people fall for it. Although, it's not so very surprising because it rarely gets discovered for what it is because 1) vehicles are so reliable now 2) they sell after 3-5 years and 3) they eventually tire of the hassle of bringing it to THAT dealer, probably before the 5/60K warranty expires which would cover it anyway.

I refused any warranty when I bought my truck.

I got a call a couple weeks later asking, rather smugly, "Why didn't you get the extended warranty?" I answered, "Because it's a Toyota."

Auto trans? If so just wait and see how much that costs to get the fluid changed out.

Dealer did my plugs for like $140, I didn't have time to do it myself. But $589 is a complete rip off.

CORRECT! If a component fails its Toyota's obligation under their own arbitration policy to prove that the component failed from lack of proper maintenance and or installation. You have the option to do your own services, and they even have a Toyota owners site were you can track all of it, just save the receipts.
