just got quoted $480 for the 30k service.. seems a bit high?

I would do it myself, but i was told that it could void my warranty. that all services need to be "tracked"

shed any light on this? this true?

How much did you pay at the dealer for it??

    thanks

it wont void your warranty. just keep your receipts and write down the mileage and whatnot. that actually seems like not a bad price for th e30k service. I did mine myself for a couple hundred in parts.

Whoever told you that doing your own service would void your warranty is full of shit. Tracking and keeping records of doing your own service is perfectly acceptable and can absolutely NOT void your warranty unless they prove that you screwed something up and it caused a warrantable part to fail (like say you forgot to put the drain plug in and your engine blew, that would be an example where they would not cover your engine because you screwed something up.

I would ask what the $480 entails because different dealers quote doing different things even though your owner's manual states what should be done. Either way, $480 is outrageous.

Front/rear diff and x-fer case fluid change $100 and not a lot of your time.
Oil/filter change $40 depending on what oil you're using
Spark plugs $30-40 and takes some basic tools but not difficult
Air filter check/change might be free depending on what your filter looks like
    Rotate tires free
Grease the driveline basically free if you already have a grease gun and a tube of grease

+1, $480 is a ripoff. I do not run in 4x4 like people up north so I will not do the transfer case and front diff. I might have 100 miles on mine in 4x4 mode. I take my air filters out and clean them with compressed air at each oil change.

Even if you're not running in 4x4, things are still spinning and the oils are heating up. If you aren't going to change the front diff and x-fer case fluid, I'd at least pull the fill plugs and make sure you have the proper oil levels in each.

That is high. I paid $301.53 back in November.

clarify, what is spinning? Something in transfer case? Diff is not because it is not locked up. Changing these fluids at 30k is WAY over kill if not running in 4x4.

The diff is disconnected on one side, the other side is still a solid connection to the passenger side wheel. It will still spin since the Tacoma doesn't have hubs that you can unlock. Granted, it's not spinning under power from the transfer case but the spinning will still generate heat.

Just looked at my receipt from the dealership. $240 included the following:

Oil & Filter Change (I provided the oil)
    Tire Rotation
    Replace Spark Plugs
Front & Rear Diff fluid change (I provided gear oil)
Transfer Case fluid change (I provided gear oil)
    Lube Drive Shaft

I replaced the Air & Cabin filters myself
