Guess it depends on how you grew up/opinion. I know who I am haha

My great grandparents got married at 17 and were together for over 75 years. My parents have been together since my mother was 18.

It goes both ways, my parents got married at 35/40 respectively which allowed them to be well established financially and knowing exactly what they wanted

I don't think marriage at that young of age is a great plan, but thats not a reason to stop me from having an amazing long term relationship with my gf now.

Theres no way id take it further than gf until after school because things/people can change so much over that amount of time, but I'm not gonna throw away something that I know is amazing right now for the prospect of something as good or better sometime in the future.

That's the way I look at it. I'm dating an awesome girl now but I don't plan on taking it any further for a long time. With graduation approaching I'm not going to limit my job opportunities based off having to stay around for someone

Yep. What I have now is incredible, but taking it any further can only mess things up IMO. At least now, if I or her changes and things aren't working its a bit easier to break it off, especially compared to if we were married. Theres no way I could propose before Im done with school, it just isn't smart.

I want a successful, stable career before I consider getting married and bringing another human being into the world

With me being in the military, no matter where I'm stationed I have access to good local colleges. Plus my gf knows that job opportunities are always going to be a challenge when being with somebody in the military. So those two will never change for me.
Haha marriage and children will be far apart for me!

This. I would have been totally screwed if I got married at 19. It's not the age part so much...more the marriage part. People differ in opinions but your life changes so much at this age so to be tied down to someone and then suddenly your outlook on life changes...it doesn't end well. Relationships are ok, just not marriage IMO.

My cousin got married at 17, 4 kids later and they're still in love (from what we can tell) and her husband started a successful business.

My grandparents got married when my grandma was 15 (I think) and grandpa was 17 (or 18) and they've been married 56 (?) years now.

I think the majority of us are talking about serious marriage, not serious relationships. lol

I'll have been with my current woman for 4 years on the 17th (St. Patrick's Day). We were engaged after being together 1.5 years. We haven't been married yet because we both started new careers a little over a year ago after moving to CA. No children for us is the plan. So far we've been successful on that.
When I was 22 I was in a relationship with a 19 year old and we ended up getting engaged. Things fell apart after she experienced the world more, her views and opinions changed, and she didn't like the idea of being "owned" by me when she hadn't really done much of anything in her life on her own; she hadn't been able to experience the highs and lows people have in life.
That's one reason I think serious relationships at a young age aren't really the best idea. There will be so much growing/changing/development as the two people go through life. People need to be allowed to experience highs and lows by themselves in order to gain life skills and find out who they are.
If a serious relationship works for a younger couple, good for them. I just know how much a few years in the world on my own changed me and made me who I am.

Exactly, Lauren. When I look back at my 19-20 year old self, I want to go back in time and slap myself in the face. I'd then tell myself, "You don't know shit, remember that".

i don't think it matters how old you are, but it's very rare to maintain the same relationship from teenage years for life. So don't be too surprised or disappointed when something doesn't work out, because you ARE still young and have plenty of time to meet someone, it's normal for people to grow apart at younger ages. Humans do not mate for life, we all have multiple people throughout our lives that we care about, we don't stay with the first person we fall for. People change a lot in stages of their life, I find that 18,21,and 25 are ages I've seen many people make the biggest changes. It's not always their personality, but sometimes what they want, want to do, or just who they want to be around. Simply most people just aren't ready to settle down before 25, and just because you are, doesn't mean the people you date are, even if they say they do. How many times has someone you known said they wanted one thing, but then went for the complete opposite... especially women. I thought I was ready to settle down when I was younger, then all of a sudden, I was 27 and realized I settled down too young and wish I had done a little more between 22 and 27 then settled down at 27

just because people change and grow apart doesn't mean its a bad idea to have relationships at young ages. It's how you learn. I don't think you can learn how to be in a relationship as an adult if you aren't in relationships as a kid
