Yeah because it's going to be easier to pull a shot gun on a bear charging at you...
High caliber handgun. A shotgun won't do anything to slow down a bear if you don't have perfect aim and a slug in it

This. A .500 hand cannon would do the job nicely :) they do have a bit of recoil though hahahah

A .454 would do the job too. Those have some nasty recoil also

I think my preferred carry is a .357

A hand gun is more than sufficient In the back country. Long hikes with a rifle or a shotgun is not the best idea.

That's an old rig. Not my current.

Agreed rifles definitely not something for a leisure walk.

    What are you rolling now?

I wasn't thinking about hiking. Just thinking about the times I would walk through the woods at my property, inspecting stands, looking for possible hunting spots, etc, I carried a rifle with me in a position to swing it up to fire. Partly to shoot at deer if I came across one. Some states actually have laws against bringing handguns while hunting, or at least below a certain caliber.

Depends on the caliber of hand gun. In my part of CA, we have to worry about mountain lions in the back country. An hour up the hill, you have to worry about bears in the back country. I have a Glock in 357 sig for hikes in my area and have a shotgun with slugs in a scabbard when I go up higher in the hills to recreate.
There have been a few aggressive bears that have been eliminated that were found to have .38 and 9mm rounds in them when they were killed and eventually dissected. Bears require a large caliber solution.

    Nice
    I can prolly do that.

You're not to hunt with a hand gun. It's for protection. I don't want to
Kill anything unless I'm hunting it's more for scaring it away. But enough rounds from a hand gun just about anything will go down

I carry my .40 everywhere with me in the back country in Colorado I've never been in a spot where it has not been more than enough if the need arises to use it . And trust me our cats and bears are bigger than yours. Mtn lions are nothing my lab has ran off 3 of them by him self. Two up the side of a mountain and one he treed. You scare any of the animals enough they will leave you alone.

Not for back country trips. That's a terrible choice.

I'm not talking about carrying where I can drive. I have an arsenal in my runner. I'm talking like back country hiking. I can assure you there are no Tacoma's or 4runners going where I hike on my days off. Leave for 4-7 days and no electronics or vehicles is an amazing experience.

Yes they are. But the good thing about them
Is they hate confrontation. If you spot them they will run off. Which is why dogs are so successful at hunting them.

I get mountain lions just outside my backyard where I live. The river is walking distance away and it draws them into the outskirts of the city. I've even seen one while fishing across the river from me. They do usually scare easily, but sometimes when they're really hungry (like right now because of the drought) they can become more troublesome.
