After watching a bunch of off roading trips in the Utah area, I think I'll be getting out of the military and do something else once my 6 years is up.

I'd rather make less money as a teacher or something and be able to go on an awesome trip once a year than make a little more and have no time with family and the outdoors haha

Benefits are nice, but if you have no time off to spend with family or doing what you want is it really worth it?

I like my job, and if I can find somewhere out West in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, or Califiornia that allows me to continue doing that with reasonable hours then I'll do it. Otherwise I may just go reserve or guard.

I can do Guard in California, or go Reserve and work out of Vegas or New Mexico.

It'll happen eventually. I'm leaning towards not getting one now but i wouldn't drop out until it was at least several over 50

Depends. If you have a kid and he was born like me it would cost you $300-350 thousand in hospital bills or $250 like my parents had to pay..

Also my parents and I went on a ton of vacations and I always got to spend time with them growing up.

Yeah, that's what is appeasing about Guard or Reserve...

That depends on the job really. The number one complaint I hear from those I work with that have families is that they usually only see their wife and kids a few minutes a day more often than not. I know many aren't, but I'm looking forward to having a family. And if I felt responsible enough and was in that situation at this moment then I wouldn't hesitate to start one now.

I know I could change jobs, but I really enjoy what I do now and if I'm going to change jobs then I might as well get out and do something else I would enjoy rather than settle for an okay job in the Air Force just to get better hours.

My mom was AD and my dad was a GS-15 so im sure you can imagine the amount of time he worked. And yet I still saw both my parents everyday for dinner.

Im just saying, dont get out because of what you hear

Got 4 more years to figure it out.

Also, not exactly what I hear. Slightly different situation, but I experience it with my gf all the time. If I'm not on day shift, we'll go for a couple of weeks without talking because of our schedules.

6 on and 3 off with three different schedules that you rotate through ever 6 weeks is a lot of schedule to work through.

OCS? I'm assuming you mean OTS haha typical Air Force with their own name for it

I've thought about it. Ultimately, if I could teach my current job I'd be happy. But if I stay in then it's only a 2-5 year stint of 5 day work weeks and then it's back to the ops of shifts.

This is why I'm thinking about just going civilian and teaching at one of the training squadrons and then teach under Reserve a few days out of each month.

    Yeah that..

Who told you it would be a 2-5 year stint of 5 days a week and then back to the norm?

It's an assignment, so after 3 years your eligible to request to PCS. They can PCS you sooner or hold you there for a couple more years depending on the needs of the Air Force. Unless you're an Ops Sup, Chief, or Flight Chief, you're gone after 3 years.

Spoke with multiple instructors while I was in training, and funnily enough one of the instructors that taught me got sent here at the same time I got back. So I spoke with her some on the subject as well.

That's weird, both of my parents did 20 + years in the air force and they usually had more time off than regular civilian workers. We always took trips.
