I would leave it as is, keep it as your dedicated do-it-all bike. I'd personally save the SM setup for a bigger bike, I think you'd get more enjoyment out of a Tard with some more soup between your legs.

You pretty much read my mind haha

My problem is my height. I'm not tall enough for any 450cc bike on dirt tires, even with lowered suspension. I don't really need more power off road, as my 250 does great. So I was thinking about getting a 450 down the road that is dedicated to street.

Only ever ridden small bikes in the dirt and on neighborhood streets tho. I'm not sure i'm ready for supermoto hoonage/hooliganism

You could get a small dual sport then like brent. The 400sm is street only while the 400 you could have do both but its a tall bike. If i had to choose id go with the 400 if you plan on having the time to ride dirt and convert plus plan to keep it a while. But if you just want to experience supermoto id get the sm, then you can determine whether you like it then build up a larger dirt/street one later.

    I'm 6' 1" 180-195lbs, i'd rather have the power of the 400 over a 200-250

Well you said small bikes... then either get the 400sm or regular 400. If you get the regular 400 you can still ride dirt and street (although not as well) plus always convert it later and find out if you think sm is for you while maintaining dirt setup too. The 400sm youll enjoy street a lot but it has no dirt capabilities (but if you enjoy a supermoto enough you can step up to a larger bike to convert and have both again)

Pros and cons of each. I think id go with a 450 but its quite a bit of money

I'd get dirt and then buy a set of street rims. Easy enough to swap.

But I fixed that issue by trading my newer KTM 690 Enduro for a 2007 KTM 525 XC-W and 2005 KTM 950 Adventure. Problem solved! :D

I will say if you're happy with the Japanese brands don't go Orange (KTM). Everything else feels massively slow and underpowered after 4 years riding orange bikes. :(

It was just too heavy for the loose steep mountain trails I was riding with other friends who all have pure dirt bikes. The suspension travel was only 10" which wasn't long enough either.

After riding it on a 3800 mile trip up to Vancouver, BC and down to Portland and back this August I decided though I could use it for adventure travel it wasn't very comfortable at 75+ mph due to the short wheelbase making it super sensitive to wind gusts and tubulence from other vehicles SUV and larger. Also with camping gear it was too heavy to hit any of the trails I wouldn't take a larger adventure bike (KTM 950/990) on while traveling. I did the trip but riding wasn't very enjoyable as most of my time was on the street and even though I stuck to side roads and about 70mph it just wasn't as enjoyable as a bigger bike due to the short wheel base and the bike getting pushed around by wind.

There was a fuel range issue for traveling and aftermarket tanks are weak and expensive (I cracked two of them in short order). The bike was coming up on 14,200 miles and was in need of a bit of an overhaul (front and rear suspension service, bearings, linkage bearings, frame powder coat, steering head bearings, and it needed new tires) so I put some feelers out and a guy was more than happy to trade his 950 and 525 for the 690 which was a good deal so I jumped on it.

When I bought the 690 new 2 years ago I didn't have a vehicle I could tow or carry a dirt bike which is why I bought it since it was light enough for half the trails out here but could also slab it out for a few hours to get places or go camping off the bike.

The bike was an absolute HOOT around town though. If I rode city streets 90% of the time it's the bike to have. Very light and freaking excellent acceleration. 50-55mpg also which for the power it has is crazy good I think.

Good to know. Just was curious from someone with first hand experience. Sounds like you do a lot of adventure riding (i knew the tanks were prone to cracks). Seems like you got a good on switching out bikes.

Think ill be looking towards the yamahas for my sm when i pull the trigger. Plus i have my cbr for long rides/highway speeds.

I agree. There is no do all bike IMO. The other one I posted is my around town scoot. This is my off road ride.

Dang it, you are making really want to scrape money together to fix up a couple of my street bikes to sell for a dual sport or trials bike more than I really should...
