My friend who knows nothing about audio decided to buy a 30 farad cap for his system which consists of a 2200 watt amp and 2 12" mtx 9500 2000w max. Will a 30 farad cap cause any problems. It's usualy 1 farad per 1000w.

from my experience a cap of any size presents itself as another load on the battery which in turn causes the alternator to overwork. for a better solution i recommend to upgrade "the big three" and install a battery with a good reserve capacity. if that is still not enough then its time for a larger output alternator.

A cap charges when there is no load from the amp, and discharges when the amp needs a quick current boost. It shouldn't affect the load on the battery at all.

a 30F cap won't do any damage at all. unless it's not bolted down good and he gets in a wreck...that thing has to weigh a ton (are you sure it's not a 3 Farad cap?)

There are a million of different opinions on this topic. In my personal experience, a QUALITY cap CAN be a benefit, but ONLY after the big-3, battery upgrade, etc. It can act as a buffer between the battery and the amp(which already has a buffer).

Large caps seems to be the new wave, and there are a million of people running them. Just make sure its mounted securely, and read the instructions for discharging etc. before touching it!!!

There is enough stored power in that cap to fry a person 500X over!!!

    Good luck.

10-4 on that. 13.8 volts isn't enough to shock you, but if you get a metal tool across those terminals, KAPOW.

caps are junk.... ask any car audio inthusiast.... sure they will supply the amp with a bit of a jolt if the battery is drained..... but once the cap is drained your at square one again..... upgrade your big 3 wires and get a secondary battery..... and the name boss audio makes me want to puke!!!

you would be best off getting another battery than a cap.... think of it as like a "AA" battery vs a car battery..... and the battery will store multiple times the amount of power that a cap will....

kinetik makes car audio batteries specifically for this matter.....
their smallest model the hc600 im more powerfull than 100 one farard caps... and is nicknamed "the cap killer".... and its around the same price or sometimes cheaper than a cap....

but yes if all else fails you need to upgrade to a high output alternator...

    throw the cap away!!!!;)

Again... opinions on this matter do vary. The "ask anyone who knows" statement is BS, as there are knowledgable people on BOTH sides of the debate. While I would never claim to know too much about anything in life, I would consider myself an enthusiast ;)

My Taco has the 130 amp alt, I ran all 0 gauge (big 3), installed a Kinetic 2200 battery, and will still more then likely install a quality cap with my system. Again, just as an additional buffer, and just my opinion. I have had success using caps (as a suppliment - not an answer) in previous installs going back to the '90's. They can/do serve a purpose. The problem is people try to use them as a bandaide of sorts on a hatchet wound...lol.

I think we can all agree to disagree, but do agree that the need for upgraded wiring (big 3), batteries, and possibly larger altenators should come first, and not be substituted by caps...:)

I am on the side of buy it if you want it, but don't expect it to fix an undersized alternator or lack of ampacity in other areas. 30 farad, though, is absolutely enormous and quite frankly, would scare the shit out of me to have in my car. And Boss Audio is a pretty lame and low quality brand that is mostly relegated to the flea market crowd that puts stick on louvers on their cars, in my experience.
