The switch is only back lit if headlights are on. When activated, the light bar graphic at the top illuminates brighter. It's a nice touch. When it's off, yes, everything is dark unless I turn on the light bar.

Do yourself a favor and take it off and reglue the endcaps had a 30 on my Forester xt and one car wash later it was fogged up with moisture and wouldn't evaporate. Also if anyone is looking to do a different light bar make sure it has osram bulbs in it it will throw much more light and be a whiter color.

Good tip. And definitely prefer a whiter light.

While driving last night, down a dark road, I noticed this light does have fairly long throw. But it was very bluish.

Haven't purchased it yet, my bank account is overheated from all the Christmas shopping and needs to cool off. When I purchase it I'll also be doing a dual battery setup, fuse/relay block, CB install and some other electrical goodies so I only have to tear apart the truck and pull wire once.

Just installed a 30" light bar today. I did mine differently an had it come out from the plastic grill. Looks awesome as if it was stock. Waiting for it to get dark

Did you go through the top plastic in the bumper like the OP?

No, I did not trust that. It's impossible to secure that to plastic and expect it not to shake and remain Saturday. I attached it straight to the frame.
I can send a picture tomorrow. I did use the hardware they suggested though, the 5" corner brace worked well

By cutting out the plastic grille you also gain another degree of stability because it does fit very snug in there
