I am pretty sure the manual says not to drive over 60mph when on H4. I suppose that warning is there for a reason.

I am not sure why but I get on average 21.5 mpg between city and highway driving. And this isn't a one time deal I am have been able to average 21.5 mpg since I got my tacoma last April. When I have gone on vacations and there is about a 2+ hour drive when I feel up I have gotten at the most (1 time only) 22.5 mpg, but usually 22 mpg ONLY HIGHWAY driving. I have never been below 19 mpg yet. THANKFULLY!! Oh I have an '06 double cab long bed 4x4 just so everyone knows.

I can get 28-29 on a 2.7 stick if I try real hard, 18-22 if I don't pay a lot of attention. This using Scangauge2.

I know first hand you can get 400+ miles with the V6 auto, and I still had 2.75 gallons left. I'm lucky in that I have the type of drive back and forth to work that is perfect for getting good mileage... plus I've learned all the light timings so I can coast up on the tail end of all the people stopped at the light just as it's turning green.

I get far better mileage on suburban roads with a 45mph speed limit than I do on the highway doing 65mph. Some of this is likely due to the fact that I trained my truck to have low shifting points when it was new but you can't discount wind resistance. Our trucks are essentially bricks on wheels, despite all the other great qualities. On flat ground I'm in 5th gear around 32mph... that's 40+mpg just cruising around town. Granted suburban streets have stoplights but I know the timing of most of them in my area so I cruise right through most of the time.

4x4 vs 4x2 seems to make a big difference, at least from what I've seen in various threads. And lots of folks argue about whether a tonneau helps or not but I measured a noticeable difference via Fuelly over 8 tanks of gas before and 10 tanks of gas after that shows adding a soft tonneau to my DC LB added almost +1mpg.

The kind of gasoline you burn also makes a big difference. I try to buy all my gas from an Exxon in town that quotes "less than 2% ethanol". Whatever that means.... I guess they have to say some ethanol exists because of how gas gets shipped cross-country. Regardless whenever I buy gas from any other station in town I lose 1.5-2mpgs. Check my Fuelly trend on 01/10 - that was gas from the Sheetz station here in town. I've filled up there twice and got reduced mileage on both occasions but "reduced" for me means ~20.5mpg. The only reason I go there is they have a discount program that periodically nets me a $0.50/gallon discount which more than offsets the mileage drop! :D

But the absolute biggest difference between good mpg and so-so is driving habits.

But 30mpg? I really don't think I'll ever get that far.

You guys chasing miles per tank are going to shorten the life of your fuel pumps that are supposed to be cooled by gas that's not there when you run it to almost M.T. Better to chase plain mpg IMO. But do what U wana do.

The best that I have gotten was 26.5 and that was across New Mexico with a tail wind and no cruise control. Right now I average between 21 and 23 mpg if I stay off of the Autobahn. I average about 12 mpg on the Autobahn but my average speed is around 110 (any faster and I can't keep it on the road, I have tried).

I agree... I ran mine down to 2.75 gallons left one time but every other time I fill up at about 1/4 tank. That time was on a lark since the fuel light went on as I left work to see if I can hit 400 on a tank driving home.
