Don't see a 400,000 mile club, made it to 400,285 miles on 2003 Tacoma Double cab, 5vzfe 3.4 V6 engine. Transmission wore out at 385,126 miles, but it had a hard life as a rural mail carrier vehicle. Owned since new.

    Congrats

More details please. You owned it since new but it was a rural mail carrier? Doesn’t the government provide mail vehicles ?

When I was in Maui over new year I saw an older woman in what looked like a 2008-2010 beat up Toyota Prius. She had a what looked like “home made” US POstal sign on her driver door... has me curious

    Appreciate educating us

No, the government didn't provide mail vehicles in extremely rural Arkansas. I started carrying mail, when it had 35,000 miles on it. Stopped carrying mail at 390,000 miles. The vehicles that the PO provides (here anyway) travel on pavement only (for the most part). PO doesn't provide the signs, you buy or make them. The mail light on top of my truck was a PO provided, but the lights didn't work & I repainted it every couple of years. PO trucks are called LLVs Long Life Vehicles. They are terrible. NO heat, a/c, radio. I drove an older model Jeep style one for awhile. Hated it, not even power steering, but it was pretty old.

My route was 100 miles; of that 75 miles were dirt roads. Bad dirt roads. I was injured on the job, so I don't work anymore. It's a great job, if you can put up with the bs and keep your truck running and not have any serious injuries. I was the only carrier that had the same vehicle for my whole career, during the time that I worked. I worked at 4 different POs. 2 small town & 2 cities.

Hubby made my job as a mail carrier easier for me by installing right hand drive (RHD) pedals in the passenger floorboard. I sat in the passenger seat and reached over for the steering wheel, blinkers, etc... and delivered the mail.

That's an awesome testimony. My wife did a mail route here in Alabama for two weeks. We both have a new appreciation for that job. :)

BTW, my 2000 Tacoma is at 299K.

    Thank you for the info

So do rural workers make same money as city workers ?

They give you per mile allowance for using your own car ?

    I am truly fascinated !!!

IDK what city carriers make, they do (PO) everything different for city carriers. Yes, rural gets per mile allowance for using your own car. Highest paid per mile, it fluctuates with the economy, but still a decent rate. Excellent benefits. I liked being rural carrier. Have a chance to get to know customers, I had numerous "pets" on the route. From dogs who want to put their front feet on the window sill, to a donkey who would run towards the mailbox, braying like crazy, wanting his treat! Miss that part the most. No uniforms. City carriers have to walk a portion of their routes. Rural is all in the car or delivering packages to the door. Support carriers, write more letters. :)

I didn't find out until I was in my 30s. I worked 12+ years. Have full retirement, b/c of injury. All of my medical is paid for the rest of my life, regarding the injury. Tried to convince our son to get a job w/PO, he doesn't want to right now....
