Let's get back to just playing on the range 308 Bolt guns....Anyone have an opinion on the Ruger Gunsite Scout? I held one today and it felt good

then I held a Tikka T3 Tactical...and holy fuck that action was smooth...but the stock felt cheap

I'd go with a Remington 700. I have a 700 sps tactical in .308 with the 20in bull barrel. Got the actual rifle for about $650. I have a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 scope and that was about $400. I do mostly range shooting and occasional hunting. I've shot out to about 550 yards with no problem.

Is there one that stood out to you above the other? Everything and anything can be changed down the road (I.E. Stock on the Tikka) and realistically we can throw out numbers and ideas all day long but if you don't like the way it feels then it doesn't mean diddly. If the action and feel is what you like then go for it. Put a nice optic on there and go shoot it. I always tape a ballistic chart to the stock for an idea and go shoot when starting with a new platform. Then you have an idea of where and how it should shoot at distance and you can compare to what it actually does.

That Tikka action was incredibly smooth...but the price tag was a little higher than I want to spend at $1200 for just the rifle

The Ruger felt great all around...not spectacular in any one category, but better in most than what I've handled so far...at least to me...and at around $800-$900...easier to stomach

That's perfectly understandable, honestly that is a huge factor. I would take some time and do some serious looking at glass as well. Find something you are comfortable with that's a solid, clear, well rounded optic to match and I don't see why that wouldn't fit exactly what you're looking for.

With the Ruger, I'll have 2 options when it comes time for scopes...it's set up with iron sights, which will be unusable with a scope installed, but it has Ruger rings that require the removal of the rear sight, and it has the picatinny rail so I can keep the irons and put a scout scope on...soooo mannnnyyyyyy decisions...

I think I just need to bite the bullet so to speak and buy whichever one I get the best deal on

Oh and I held a Howa 1500 Kryptek today too...decent...but def behind the Ruger even though it comes with a scope

I haven't screwed with the Ruger rings recently but if they are anything like the ones on my old Ruger Ranch Mini then they are a serious PITA if you plan to do frequent switches of optics.

Again it all comes back to what you feel best about. If you are happy and like what you've purchased you will find a way to shoot it well. (Not based on anything just how I choose to look at it)

For what it's worth, Remington is offering a rebate on their 700 ADL until the end of the year.

When I was getting my first rifle (which was also my first firearm ever) I was between the 243 and 308 version of the 700 ADL. The gun itself is like the Ford F-150 of rifles (forgive me for that analogy in this forum. Haha). Everybody and their grandpa has one. Ended up getting the 243 version, but they're both great guns.

    I have a Remington 700 PSS in .308

I'm very happy with it for a range gun.
1 inch groups at 200 yds.

Not sure where the other dudes post went but if you read this, ask George Gardner (yep the HMFIC at GA Precision) what he won the sniper cup challenge with a few years ago. Thats correct a .243 with an 8 twist tube shooting 115 Dtacs. I do a little shooting myself and I don't have to guess...........

I get it but we're trying to find the OP a .308

I love my .243 and it will shoot 1K plus when I'm done with it....so create a thread and we can discuss it's merits there. Not hating just saying.

    Carry on folks

I just kind of want to teach myself to shoot a bolt style rifle with scope for distances a little bit longer than I'm used to running an m16

So, just target? Not worried about carrying a heavy, fat barreled rifle up and down hills and hollers and the like?

I'd choose the 700 SPS tactical, with your price range, however, the 700 XCR compact tactical is sweet. A great rule of thumb to follow, spend at least as much on glass, as on the rifle.

OP didn't mean to hijack your thread, like others have said a 700 tactical in .308 would be a good place to start.

The Mossy is actually the one I have the most time behind...and it doesn't fit me well...hence my search

Seems like a decent rifle, especially for the money
