Sure, if the dealer wants to change the engine oil every 5K (or even ATF fluid) that may be fine, if the customer is willing to pay for it. But if an engine oil additive causes mechanical problems under the powertrain warranty, or a fuel "cleaner" causes a smog check failure under the Federal emissions warranty, Toyota should not be happy. If enough people complain about excessive snake oil service quotes, Toyota may listen. But most of us probably DIY or use honest independent shops.

    Agreed!

If Toyota recommends using these "snake oil" kinds of products like cleaners, conditioners, etc.... it will be noted in the maintenance schedule. If not, I don't use it.
Same with the fuel and oil. If the engine was designed to run on traditional oil that meets specific requirements, and run on regular unleaded, I am not going to just dump in full synthetic oil or run premium unleaded just because the guys on the forum say that all the cool kids are doing it.

Sounds like you could get yourself a 25 dollar oil change and spend two seconds looking at your fluids and be fine. Most of that stuff listed was "inspection". So they're gonna ask for more money to actually do anything.

Great advice, but you’ve probably never lived on an island before.

Good point zippsub9. But I have been to the Hawaiian islands numerous times. I know things are more expensive there (especially gasoline). Depending on what island he is on there should be independent garages that could give him some competitive estimates. On all the Hawaiian islands I have been to I have noticed an abundance of Taco’s. There must be places that service them other than the dealer. Otherwise I would list just the mechanical procedures that are required like oil change, tranny fluid etc and have some place just do those. I would cross of the list all the crap like adjust the drivers side rug, fuel or oil additive and so on.

You’re right. I brought a taco and 4Runner when I lived there. Brought not bought, and sold them both when I left for double the value on the mainland. They love the Toyotas. I could never get the kamainah hookup because I was a howley regardless of my Hawaii driver license which keeps you from paying the tourist taxes. Anybody that touches a Toyota on the main island, at least, knows exactly what you need and what you got and they all know how much each other charges. It’s ruthless. 808 crew can validate all this. Hell I surfed with a Puerto Rican just because he was always mistaken for local.

I agree with everything being pointed out but when I argued anything I was told to leave the island. I was able to bribe a couple guys at inspection stations for my sticker when I was rebuilding the 88 4Runner and I had no horn. When he said Horn, I held out my hand and gave him the hang loose shacka bra so he laughed and let me go.

WTF! I went to the dealer for my 30k service thinking it was under warranty still, and they quoted me $212... Ended up just doing it myself

You can do most if not all of that yourself. Fairly easy, you should get a torque wrench and metric sockets for the dif and transfer case fluids. Cleaning the Mass Airflow cleaning is a can of MAF cleaner spray. The MAF sits on top of the eng. within easy reach.

P.S. get a grease gun and grease the drive shaft.

Yeah im definitely going to. What I'm curious about the most is if the tranny and brake fluid is a flush or just a drain. After looking at this list there's alot I'm going to scratch off it. @siznarf

Not that simple meaning the way to check for the correct amount of fluid? Theres a thread on here but it's probably best to have that done professionally if your not comfortable doing it
