I know the majority of trucks that rate ‘likes’ on Instagram and here on TW are rocking 33” and larger tires. No doubt they look cool and do add a bit of clearance in return for the efforts required to fit them properly. I’ve been debating doing the CMC on my truck and fitting the big boots for at least a year, but my practical side has always held me back. My uses for this truck include a lot of highway miles when I’m getting where I’m going, and so far 31’s have never held me back off road when things get fun. Truthfully, if all I cared about was performance, I have no complaints at all about this tire size.

Regardless, even if looks were the only criteria, lately I find myself liking the look of 31’s on a Tacoma in comparison to the larger tires that you see everywhere. There is something scrappy, or utilitarian, about this smaller tire size. It’s all about the business and not the bling, if that makes sense.

Anyways.........there is so much love for the bigger tires on this site I wanted to give the good ol’ 31’s a little love. Don’t know if I’m alone in these thoughts.

    CFC6B267-5887-416F-BC5F-762A1268F683.jpg

Edit: (the tire on my roof is a second full
size spare tire for a specific trip I did. It does not live up there, and a 31” tire fits under the truck just fine)

Edit: what I am referring to as ‘31”s’ is the commonplace 265/70/17 (what I run) or 265/75/16 size that is “one size up” from the stock size on most Tacomas. There is a lot of variability between tire makers in true diameter in these metric sizes.

Stock suspension? Looks fine to me are those TKOs? I had those on my 4Runner they wore like iron (and road like iron for the 10ply) but were great tires. No soybean stalks puncturing the sidewalls when driving through fields going hunting.

They are 6ply K02s so are a bit softer than the 10 ply version. They have been very durable. No issues whatsoever even on some very rocky trails, dried creek beds etc.

My truck is lifted approx 1.5” all round with factory rake maintained.

30.5" seems fine with me. It is what the truck was designed to use.

Yes. Technically not a true 31” tire, but what most people would call it.

You’re not alone ! I like the idea of how simple it is to stick with the 31’s and stay away from the screwing around with a cmc, trimming, more wear and tear, power loss, I’m sure the list could go on. Maybe down the road my opinion will change but I stayed with 31’s and a small lift on my 2nd Gen for 6 years and was always happy so I can’t see it. My Falkens are at the shop now waiting for me to go get em on! Would love to see some pics of the other happy folks trucks who are staying with this size.

265/75/16s. Awesome mileage, plenty of power, hauls the boat and dead deer just fine.

Right there with you. Big fan of my 265/75/16 Toyo Open Country R/T's. They do everything I need them to do on and off-road. The 285's look like appealing, its a rabbit hole for many.

Slicks and cords are where I like to be when a tire is done. These have been making me unhappy in the wet since new though. Oddly, they did great in the snow and offroad. Tire tech is strange like that these days.

I'm looking forward to the Wildpeaks though. They just arrived at the shop, but the appointment is next Wednesday. We'll see if they can get me in sooner.

I'll wear my bike tires down and have a set ready to mount.

    upload_2019-10-1_9-24-51.jpg

I was thinking about doing that with the Taco, but I don't know how the TPMS would like Airsoft pellets.
