Its the start/ stop and steep grades that will kill a transmission and brakes. Long highway miles are very gentle when towing, the engine doesn't care either. Its why they can tow a 747 with a family suv/crossover once its moving.

    Heavy load, hills, higher temperature...

This seems intuitive to me. Merely increasing the load on a relatively stable system at equilibrium doesn’t seem like it would 10x the wear.

I'll let you do the googling, I did a little head start for ya, its not a huge secret that heat kills transmissions, and heavy towing on hills creates the conditions for transmissions to overheat more so that flat ground.

    Heat and transmission life

Heavy towing on hills transmission life

If there’s data that towing on the highway 300k miles is more wear than city driving 300k miles, I’d love to see it.

But is highway towing more wear than city driving?

    You did:

You said here that towing is worse than city driving in wear than highway driving. I’m asking what basis you have for that.

Read his thread. Read the weight of the trailers how many miles he drives and what terrain he drives on. Pulling trailers like that over hills and off-road to work sites is extreme. Or is this just another let’s just argue about something thread? If that’s the case let’s talk about the chin spoiler again…..errr um no wait. Let’s not.

And I gave you a head start on the research to prove the answer one way or another, you haven't really proven your point either so I figure if you felt so strongly about it you would be cracking away at that research right about now.

I was implying that towing that trailer at 6500 lbs everyday is not just highway driving wear on that truck...I will happily be proven wrong and hand over the great highway towing miles vs city miles trophy to ya.

but but...how much of that is in the city...lol. I'd like to know if a auto behind a 3.5 would hold up to that, my guess would be no, but Toyota does build some good transmissions

To throw more fuel on this fire, tow ratings are more about how the weight is distributed than what the engine/transmission and frame can handle

That's why with the proper trailer and weight control systems the tow rating can double or triple what the carrying capacity is. Its more about what your truck can safely stop and steer than how the engine/transmission holds up. Is towing harder than not towing under the same conditions? Yes, but so is off road driving. Worse than city driving in stop and go, long idle times, short trips that dont let the oil get up to temp, multiple cold starts a day. I doubt it.

The suspension and brakes will take most of the beating.
