Hey guys, I've had my 17 off-road for about 8 months now. I just installed bilsteins 5100's with the rear Dakar heavy duty springs and 285/70/17 tires. I love everything about the truck except for the high rpms between 70-75. The tranny doesn't bother me when I'm driving around town or any speed up to about 65. However, the second I hit 70-75 on cruise this thing stays at 3200rpms unless I go downhill and then it finally shifts. I understand losing mpgs with the lift but I'm barely hitting 14mpg on the highway. I had the same set up on my 08 and still managed 18-19. Is this normal? And really the mpg doesn't bother me it's just the high rpms are starting to annoy the sh*t out of me. Are there any solutions or will I just have to get use to it? Almost wish I opted for the tundra if this was going to be the case.

I haven't tried shifting up yet. And that's my guess that for some reason its sticking in 4th. And right now I have the ect off but I've tried it while it's on and it's still the same.

I've only had the lift on for a month now so I didn't know if the tranny will need to relearn my driving habits or not. I just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this.

Do you have a 2.7L with 4.88 gears.

has nothing to do with the lift and everything to do with the gears not matching the tire size anymore.

    Time to regear...

Bigger tires would drop your RPMs at highway speeds, not do what the OP is experiencing. Sounds like the truck isn't using all the gears in the trans.

They cause the trans to NOT be able to up-shift because the RPM's would be to low to maintain speed. This is such a common issue with every vehicle that gets big tires put on it and not geared correctly. Not exclusive to Toyota's.

When I go to 285's(or bigger) on my 17 I will be doing 4.88 gears(maybe 4.56, I havent researched a ton). I expect my RPM's to remain exactly the same as stock.

I built a 14 Jeep Wrangler. Started with 32's and 3.73 gears from the factory. Roughly 19mpg average. I went to 37" tires on 4.5" lift and 4.88 gears(which was the correct gearing per the chart to keep my RPM's equivalent to stock) and guess what... my MPG was still around 19mpg and my cruising rpm was almost exactly the same as stock... Had I not done gears at the same time I would have expected the trans to never get to 5th on the highway and be stuck in 4th, hell might have never gotten to 4th, I dont know.

Since you're getting the same mpg as a Tundra, just get the Tundra and don't lift it, no need problem solved.

At 78mph I'm just shy of 2000 rpm but that's without cc, no lift, stock size tires, and on flat land.
The cc does seem to change how the truck shifts and behaves so I try to avoid it and wouldn't use it on hilly terrain.
Yeah, it sucks I know, but I've maned up and its not killing me as most of my trips are under an hr drive.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

The cruise control sucks on every toyota I've had , my dodge work truck cruise works a lot better you can set it to a specific speed plus it down shifts a lot smoother .

This is "normal" operation according to Toyota. I have stock wheels and tires on my 2017 TRD Bro and the damn thing runs in 4th gear at 75mph almost all the time (unless there is a tail wind).

There's the root of your problem, you're being haunted by your "wife" (2nd gen) because you left her for someone much younger. Your "wife" loved you and you betrayed her. You can stop all this madness if you trade this, this horrible monster back in. Your wife will still love you no matter what... And probably last another 200k miles before major service.
Gosh I love these threads :D

I figured out on mine, in cruise if you quickly pump and release the gas pedal, it will upshift.

Hi. Your truck does not have enough low end torque to upshift all the way with your tires, which are quite a bit larger than stock. You may want to regear with a 4.56:1 or 4.88:1.

Stop using cruise control and let the speeds fall a few MPH when you're going uphill and load increases.

Learn to finesse the pedal so it will only downshift to 5th. Cruise control, in my opinion, is overly aggressive in some situations and shifts from 6th to 4th and won't upshift until the load has decreased for a period of time.

I take a 140 mile trip quite often on a highway that has a 75 mph speed limit. With cruise on the entire way, I'll get about 17 mpg. If I finesse the pedal and let the speeds drift between 70-75 to avoid unnecessary downshifts, I can consistently get 18 - 18.5 mpg.

This is exactly spot on...The engine doesn't have enough torque (or power) to run low rpms with the bigger tires so it has to stay in 4th-5th gear.

Have you ever rode a multi-speed bicycle? Same theory. You can't ride around everywhere in 10th gear. You don't have enough power in your legs.

    Edit: "Can't"

I do what you do, and it works well for me also. I think the OP's tires outgrew his gearing. OP may need to regear or shrink the tire diameter below 30 inches.
