Howdy folks, I got my truck not to long ago and it is bone stock except for the added trd spec, I would appreciate any feedback on if and how to fit 33’s, do I need to lift it first? By how much? Is regear necessary? Found a steal of a deal on marketplace but don’t want to pull the trigger till I know!

It depends. Tell us more about your plans...

What size 33's? 285? All terrain or mud terrain?

Do you plan to keep your stock wheels? Some people rub at the UCA with 285 and some people don't. This will change if you get aftermarket wheels with negative offset (wheels stick out more)

When you lift the truck and have negative offset you actually create more rub issues at the fender / pinch weld. Look up pinch weld mod as you'll likely need to do that.

Are you auto/manual? Regear isn't necessary with manual. I have 4.56 with manual and RPMs are 3k+ at highway speeds. Not absolutely necessary on auto either but you'll notice a dip in low end torque.

    Welcome to TW.

If you are an auto, a regear will be a must. 33s will likey require a combination of some lift and some clearancing. How much of each will depend on how clapped out your old suspension is. How many miles on on that rig?

You know, there are a ton of threads on this site that cover all of these topics. You should read some of them.

The tires I’d be putting on are 255/85/16 and there on some TRD beadlock wheels, and yes I have much more to look through but what I could find was people putting 33’s on somewhat modified tacomas, as the first upgrade I want to do I just wanted to see if it could be done as the first thing! Also my car is automatic at the moment and daily it to school and work. The tires are also BF Goodrich mud terrain tires. And thank you guys for the diligent responses, glad to be part of a great community!

I did 255/70/17's (32" pizza cutters) on FJ Steelies with no lift and it BARELY fit. You'll want a lift for anything bigger. I always recommend Bilstein 5100's on a budget, or Old Man Emu's for a slightly larger budget. Call my buddy Hugo at https://runnin4tacos.com/ and he will have all of the information you will want/need.

These trucks really weren’t designed for big tires. Back in the 90s, 31s were considered to be a large tire size, and that’s about the largest they accounted for. I have 255/75/17s and even those rub slightly on the frame at full lock.

Perfect timing. This thread on that tire size popped back up recently: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/1st-gen-pizza-cutter-stance-255-85r16.540351/

As Digiratus mentioned, a combo of lift & clearancing will be necessary. On auto and this size 33, I'd consider a regear eventually if not now. Trying to think as a student possibly on a budget, you don't necessarily have to do it immediately but will feel the bog. Although the diameter is taller than a 285, you'll make up on some drag efficiency because it's a narrower tire.

I'm running the BFG M/T 255/85r16 on Procomp 8" wide wheels (-12 offset, 4 backspacing). I initially rubbed the frame slightly at full lock but stopped as the tire wore down. I did a pretty aggressive pinch weld mod so only rubbed the pinch weld at compression off road. Also important to note, I have about 2" lift with a uniball UCA that allows some forward caster adjustment to push it further away from the pinch weld.

Also if you want to geek out on 255/85r16, this white paper is what pushed me in the 255 direction: https://www.purefjcruiser.com/docs/Skinny-tire-White-paper.pdf
