man that looks so good. I’m about to change my tires out to an all terrain tire. I was gonna go with 265/70/18’s with 1” spacers but those 285s look awesome. Now I’m not sure what to do

Stock SR5 4WD, did 3 trips up and down a mountain. Tank still averaged 24ish hand calculated. Engine never really revved past 2700ish RPM's. Engine braking down was pretty high in the RPM's, but that's a wash as it is on fuel cutoff. My 3rd gens would have been screaming going up the same mountain.

That is the single most reason I can't wait to get mine. Not just the screaming, but the bronco riding rapid shifts between 3rd and 5th. Got so ridiculous having my head snapping back and forth. Even with the way overpriced ripoff tunes that was rampant in the 3G forum, I would always have to give up and drop down to 3rd in S mode. And then turn my stereo to blast to futilely battle 4500 rpm engine noise. Good riddance.

The 8 speed still shifts in and out all the time, it's just a much smoother transmission. Now, that's on those state roads I travel 99.9% of the time. Took it for a spin on the highway and it just stayed in 1 gear at 80mph.

This new drivetrain isn't even in the same zip code as the previous Tacoma. Night and day difference. I've several 3rd gen Tacomas, and this thing is a YUUUUUGE upgrade.

What are technical reasons for a lot of dissatisfaction with 2.4L turbo, other than objectively less aggressive sound than v6?

I would think the main one would be added complexity.
Also concern about putting more power through a smaller engine, but that should have been mitigated by stronger internal parts and better bearings.

    We'll see.

Can't nobody say a DAMN thing about the new 2024 2.4L turbo's reliability until at least 5 or so years pass by & people are starting to routinely chalk up >150-175K miles on the odometer without serious issues.

The jury is categorically OUT till then & there's nothing to discuss about it.

anytime one drives the freeway system during rush hour your mpg will be inflated since you are in the "draft" vs traveling without a line of vehicles in front of you. More noticable when you are faced with high head winds and being in the draft vs pushing a box into the head wind out of the draft.

Agreed…although the reason I wasn’t very concerned is because of Toyota’s long standing track record for decades in relation to reliability. I mean, no matter what the haters say, it kind of speaks for itself.

    Am I wrong?

I'm not that concerned about the engine either. I pick mine up 7/22. Was much more concerned about TFL popping the front diff. There's a video out saying that Toyota did a software update to help avoid it. Claim is that MTS was set to "rock" and got surprised by the slippage on the ice.

Yeah and honestly I kind of baby mine, so I am not too concerned. My idea of "off-road" is driving thru my yard. Lol

I'm not going to be quite that bad. Am trading up from a Pre-Runner because there are some places I want to go that either need 4WD or don't depending on who you ask. Not planning on taking on any trails past about 3 or 4 (easy-moderate) on OnX Offroad's rating scheme.

Yeah I’m thinking you’ll be fine. I’m also thinking that in today's internet world of non-stop drama things tend to get overblown. 20 years ago, you would have never heard of the one isolated case of a new truck having a mechanical issue under heavy stress.

But yeah, although that PreRunner is a nice concept, I’d say those are for someone in a non snow environment who literally never leaves the paved road.
